So after doing a bit of research when I was doing the reverse camera mod, I got the idea to add a second camera. I was thinking of buying a second factory camera(mounting it in the grill). And with being able to turn on the reverse camera at any time I figured since I know where the camera connector IS I could run a dtdp switch and connect both camera to the switch and use the switch to change between the two cameras.

I've found a lot of discussions on adding the factory camera or using the factory camera with a aftermarket head unit but not to have a front(no DIY thread) at all.

My only conern is the head unit getting confused if I switch the cameras while they are being "viewed". I don't think switching between the cameras would hurt anything while the camera is not being "viewed"

Has anyone attempted anything like this?

I haven't done this, but I've been thinking about doing the same. I have to park in the city a lot, and a front camera would really help for those tight parking spots.

I'm interested in this myself. You could also maybe integrate like a dash cam in a way. So even when you aren't viewing it, it could record.

Nice Brudda. I am set on the rear and have been contemplating the front while getting other mods done but, after going out this past weekend and my fantastic wife spotting and doing her best. I need this done nd will say this... Thank God for 3/16 steel plates and spray paint. No joke

My idea. I'll look up the part numbers. I'd like to use all factory connectors so as far as the factory wiring is concerned it's untouched

This mod will obviously have to be paired with the back up camera on anytime mod.

Mine is in the head unit. If it was in the mirror, tbh I would not use it as a sporting camera. That diagram I made could easily work with an aftermarket setup as well.

However there aren't to many good looking 4PDT switches out there haha

Sometimes I wished I worked for Toyota instead of VW would make custom mods much easier

I've been thinking about this as well. Let me know if you find the OEM numbers, I'm mainly looking for the factory connectors since I don't mind wiring up a camera myself.

You may only need a DPDT switch for the camera feed, since I assume 2 wires are for feed and 2 are for power. You could supply power to both cameras at the same time and just flip between front and back.

As far as the switch goes, I know one wire is ground and one is power, but it would be allot easier(little more expensive) to do all four. And with all four done there is far less worry something could get shorted or bad signals. The way I have it done is there is no wire splicing, just connecting the wires to the switch.

Since I don't have Toyota wiring diagrams or operation manuals I'm not exactly sure if the camera is powered all the time, is ground switched, pwm, etc. so to play it safe I did it this way

Side note: I was talking with a Toyota tech and apparently they don't have the part numbers on the connector housings(even VW does that lol). So we are trying to track them down now

Why do you want a camera in front? I could see this being really useful for crawling over rocks and whatnot.

I think it would a lot easier to do it with DPDT. Here's your diagram with the new wiring.

    2b35e5a50fa84f60172bed361efccd22.jpg

It looks more complicated but it's a much easier circuit and you don't need a special switch, especially since you're making a custom harness.

You may be able to get some items from the Land Cruiser as it has front/side/rear view cameras. If you can find wiring diagrams on it, should help a little bit. They are all displayed in the same head unit and can show all at a time if I remember right.
