I disagree with you, I had one of them too and it decided to grenade going down the highway. Took out the R&P and the transmission when it locked up. ECGS does not advise people to put them in either.

Thank you, and thank you for not making fun of what most have feeled like a stupid question. But since the E-locker is electronic in nature, as opposed to an LSD which is hydraulic in nature, I thought it was worth asking.

I've been running a powertrax no slip for 7.5 years and have had 0 problems. I also know a few other running them with zero problems. If it grenaded then it was due to an installation error.
I've installed 3 of them including my own and it's held up great.
Lockers just don't explode for no reason. Eaton would be out of business.

And btw....there is a company doing lsd/full locker at the push of a button. The name escapes me, but it does exist.

Well what’s better? My last truck had no E-Locker my new one does. I was pretty happy that the new one has done just in case.

the 8.4 is stronger due too a trussed bearing cap and bigger pinion bearings.

Well damn. I’m not taking my new one off-road anyway. It’s too clean for that and it’s a DD. I can’t wsit until I get the cash for a trail rig.

Love mine. I live in south carolina but travel to indiana for the holidays and run into severe snow quite frequently.
Not ideal for a full time locker. You simply have to "relearn" how to drive in that situation. I drove 7 hrs from northern Indiana to Tenn in 7-10 inches of snow a few years ago.
It was white knuckle the entire time. But 600 lbs of sand, 20 lbs of air in the tires, patience and a steady throttle and I made it.
I wouldn't recommend it if you live in colder climates where it snows often.

Edit: I'm guessing you get a lot of snow in Newfoundland?

i drive with snow on the road half of the year. maybe im just used to it but it doesnt affect me at all. i dont even notice it there. its really no worse. maybe even better than a clutch type lsd in snow. a clutch lsd will stay "locked" because there isnt enough torque to make it slip. as soon as you let off the gas with this it seems to unlock nicely.

Nothing tricky! You may be confusing the Lockright with the Powertrax unit..

I've used the Lockright in Fords... Great unit.. Ratchets on corners... No big deal... Its a conversation maker!

One thing though, it increases your overall backlash of the driveshaft by 20-30%! Can make for some odd characteristics... Like coasting and hitting your brakes on the highway.. You can feel the slop..

Also, when the unit isn't meshed and you create wheel spin, it will create force on the cog teeth and it will eventually slip and mesh creating a pretty good clunk...lol

All is good, this is how it works..

Look into the Powertrax first, it is a bit more graceful and is still a locker... Just more pieces...

Lockright will work fine though.. I racked up 100k on one truck a tleast with one in it.. I took it out before selling th truck and put it in another one..lol... Tolerances never changed..

Adding my $.02 to the topic as a 2wd owner with a locker. You don't really need it, I hit the same trails as was mentioned before and never had the need to engage the locker. (Only used it a few times just in case but didn't really need it.) In my opinion money will be better spent on buying recovery gear. Such as traction boards, tow ropes, and shovel. Get some good AT tires, (I have General grabbers at2's, they are fantastic) and your good to go. Save the money your would of spent on a locker on something else (lights, cb radios, ect.)

The E-lockers aren't "electronic". The "E" just stands for electric, which just refers to the type of actuator that engages the locker. The most common aftermarket are "air" (ARB lockers) where a compressed air solenoid engaged the locker. For our e-lockers, it is an electric solenoid. The "meat" behind the lockers themselves are more or less the same.

The " Powertrax no slip" is just a smoother operating version of the Lock Right... Its still a locker..

I see Powertrax offers an LSD now though...

A lot has changed since I was into these, it all used to be under Richmond Gear..lol

And all they had was the Lock Right and No Slip..
