So I'm converting my canopy into a sleeper for my bike race series/snowboarding overnighters/party in the woods series. I want to either add a roof rack to my canopy and get a proper awning. But what are some solutions you guys have for just adding some sort of tarp over the back end of your canopy? Pics and set up tips are appreciated!

Do you have roof rack tracks already installed on your canopy?

I installed roof rack tracks for carrying things. I just attach a tarp to it when needed.

Basically the same thing I do. I have an ENO tarp and one I think came from Dick's. The one from Dick's has Velcro loops on one end and uses two poles staked out on the other. It's designed to attach to a roof rack and it's pretty easy to set up, I just stand on the open tailgate. If I were doing it again I'd probably just buy an ARB awning to start with.

Curious to see what everyone is using who is not getting a pre-built awning.

Nope. But a local rack company will do it for 100 bucks. My buddy had some put on his canopy and they did a fantastic job

I have a Kelty Noah's Tarp that I like quite a bit. I think I got it on Amazon for a pretty good price.

I also have a 270 degree awning that I bought used for like $180 or something. I frequently just put a tarp on the ground, sleeping pad etc on top that and sleep under the awning.

That looks cool, but I can't imagine it holds up to much wind in a storm.

Do it yourself and save the money, it's easy. Several threads in the shell forum on how to do it.

I have a super simple awning setup on my 1st gen that goes into the roof rack tracks and works with or without the roof racks on (I usually leave them off unless I'm transporting something).

I got some extra nuts for mounting the roof rack into the track and installed them into the track. They're rectangular with a threaded hole in the middle. I installed a long stainless set screw of the same thread as the nut, then put a washer on top and ran a nylock nut down on top of the whole thing to hold it together, end result looks like this:

    DSCN4954.jpg

I put one of those at each end of the track. Then, I bought an el cheapo tarp and installed grommets the same distance apart as the studs. When it's time to put up the awning, I drop the grommets over the studs and toss a wingnut on top to keep the tarp on. The non-vehicle side is supported by two collapsible tarp poles. I'm not sure what brand I've got, they were in the cheap crap section of a store like Dick's or Big 5.

    Finished prototype in action:
    DSCN4108e.jpg

After I tested it a few times I splurged and had a canvas shop make me a custom tarp out of some heavy duty awning material. The downside of this awning is that you have to run guylines for the tarp poles. The upside is that I can install it on either side of the truck. If I'd been thinking, I would have put all of the mounts the same distance apart as the width of the roof rack tracks, then I could put it on either side or the back. Oh well. Another plus is that I can use the awning if I have to go under the truck for any reason.

I haven't used it much lately, I've got a family now and a DCSB which has become the road trip machine. We run a smittybilt 8' awning on the passenger side of that truck when we're travelling.

It doesn't hold up at all in a windstorm. A decent breeze will make the hole thing flip up perpendicular to the ground.

If there's actual wind I either won't set it up or will guy it out to heavier stuff.

Alu Cab makes a really nice super sturdy awning but it's $1500. It'll stand up to stronger winds and has legs that fold down for more support and can still be guyed out.
