I just bough a basic SR without the convenience package and need to add keyless or better yet remote start. I just have the dumb regular key. It has an H on it but it seems that when most people on the forums refer to the H key they refer to the key with remote control head and not the fact that all the newer tacoma's use a H key blank.

I really like that key where the remote and the key are one. I know I can get an OEM keyless module but I think the OEM keyless module is differnt the the module that would have came with the truck if I paid up. ie.. this Toyota dealer sells an OEM kit but the keyfobs are different. https://www.toyotamcdonoughparts.co...heast-toyota-keyless-entry-system-00016-32901

What I really want to know - is there any method for me to get remote start or keyless entry where the remote and key are one piece. Or should I just looking at an aftermarket solution now and I should expect a separate remote and key.

But that kit already assumes you have keyless entry? I just have a dumb looking key. I think the kit you are looking at listens to the signals on the bus for the door lock and if it sees lock three times it fires up the remote start. I just have a dumb key. I was thinking i could by a keyless entry key to add the 'h key with the remote head' but I think the keys that claim to be OEM keyless are differnt then if you got the keyless from the factory with the fancy key

Oh I gotcha. You don’t even have remote locks....didn’t know that was still a thing haha......guess the SR5 trim is the Hkey Auto. I’m not sure what you can do, because I’m wondering if the computer in your truck would even work with Jimmy’s remote starter

I’d say you’re best bet would be to post on that thread, tag him, and ask

    Good luck!

@Taco-piper nailed it. And yes, exclusive as far as after market DIY 100% plug ‘n’ play, no wire cutting or tapping and no need to pay a dealer a $900+ to install the same hardware they’re buying from me. Yes, I asked when parts department bought from me how much they were going to charge the customer.

This gives you keyless entry not to be confused with smart FOB, touch entry. That’s a whole different set of hardware. The after market version that’s economical works by unlocking when you’re approaching the vehicle and are within 2-3 feet of the door, and locking when you walk away outside of that same range. Mixed reviews on those kits because you just can’t trust it did or didn’t do it if for example the battery is dying or what not. People want to know by some sort of “touch” rhat they locked or unlocked the vehicle whether it’s touchjng a FOB or a door handle. I’d have to agree which is why I choose not to sell those proximity doorlock kits.

I ended up getting a kit from @jmeitz. It was a bit cheaper and has the same two way key fobs. it was plug and play as well..
