I just did my first oil change (2900 miles) and I used the FRAM extra guard filter. I have used FRAM for years without any problems (that I know of), but then I started to research on the web re: Oil Filters and the FRAMs have been given bad scores at numerous sites. What fl4x4 says is apparently true, as far as the quality of components used, when compared to other manufacturers. There were even some lawsuits in the 90's over possible top end damage possibly linked to FRAM Oil filters due to a cheaply designed and built anti drain back valve.
Soooo to be safe, I will no longer be using FRAM with it's questionable construction for future oil changes. FRAM has built up a good reputation, but it has been based on slick marketing and not actual performance. Not sure which filter to use instead, although the WIX and Purolators seem like a better substitute

Here is a link providing some info on the matter: http://www.knizefamily.net/minimopar/oilfilters/opinions.html

I really like my Amsoil filters, and they've held up great! They're a bit more than the average filter, but IMO, it's worth it. To each his own. :)

This does come down to how hard you play and maintain your equipment....Drop fluids early and consistently you will enjoy the fruits BUT extend it ,you might want to upgrade the products you use.....My Toyotas have always gone the 100k plus and luckily I've NEVER been inside the motors( my son has tried to change that;) )....
Castrol has been THE oil and either,OEM, HD orange filters;) or Wix have been the filter.......K&N now lets them all breathe.....

I will check out the Advanced sale, they were my go to store...Pads for both the Camry and Taco last Sunday. But my sales clerk just moved over to Autozone....She knows her stuff and does not "Push" the % parts....

Aren't those filters for Fords? You are saying you are running a ford oil filter on your 09 taco? No problems?

Reason I am asking, I am due up for oil change on my 09 taco. Last time around I went w/ Penzoil Plat for my oil (cheap at walmart) and a oem toyota oil filter. Filter was like double of that motocraft at the dealer. I am always looking to save a dollar here or there. So I am very curious about both the motocraft and the AAP filter.

    Thanks!

Toyota uses a 3/4-16 thread for their filter, the same as many Fords. The Ford FL-400S or the PH3600* in the Fram sizing matrix, is a very good oversize for many Toyota apps. I used the FL-400S on my daughters Corolla for many years and will use it on my Tacoma once I am out of warranty.

One bit of advise that is often overlooked when using over sized filters is that if you have an actual oil filter failure, Toyota can deny you warranty since you are not using the proper sized filter. Also, the filter manufacturer can deny claim since you are using a size in a non spec'd application.

*NOTE: Fram sizing is for reference use only and would never advise the use of actual Fram in any size or application. Many non Fram made store brand filters in parts houses do use the Fram number system though.

If I have a correct size/# Puolator or wix and it fails toyota will still deny the claim and tell me to go through the filter company. Only way around that is run the correct 4.0 (not the short 3.4 the counter guys like selling) filter from toyota. But if the FL400s or Wix/purolator fail within 5k miles I think I have bigger issues. Never seen one fail. I've been running the Longer L20195/PH3600/FL400S for years since my 3.0 Yota. I've never had any dry start or pressure issues. Oil is always super clean. I stick to 5k intervals.

As for the fram in the link, fram builds it to Honda spec. It's not a radioactive orange can. And I do agree if you neglect your 5k intervals I would use a Wix/M1 etc. But cut open a factory Yota filter and you'll see. it's nothing to write home about. It's a $1 filter witha $4 toyota logo. The box it comes in has more quality. usually they collapse so they plug. engine begins making noise and light comes on. you shut down no damage. Only seen that with a fram 1x back in the 90's.

So, the filter that came stock was the 90915-20004. This is not readily available anymore I think. Toyota sells a YZZD1 and YZZD3. D1 is for 6cyl application and the D3 is for the 8cyl. When I did my last oil change, they gave me the YZZD3. Now i asked for a oil filter for a 2009 4.0 and I was given the D3. But under the logic that if there is a failure and a oversized filter is installed (hence the D3) I could be out of luck? I have searched around the net and it seems alot of people are getting the D3's from the parts dept.

How would one go about finding out something like this? email toyota?

edit: nevermid. right off toyota's website. YZZD3 is for 05-08 application on V6. I will assume same for 2009.
