I'm getting ready to sell my 2004 Tacoma so I can buy a new Tacoma, but I'm not sure how much to price it for? I want to price it so I can sell it pretty quickly (without pricing it too low). I'm not trying to eek every dime out of it I can. I want somebody to look at it and say, "I'll take it!"

I want to sell it outright because I'm confident I'll get more $$$ for it than by trading it in, which is what my local dealer told me anyway. I'm thinking selling it on my local Craigslist might be the easiest way to go? If you have another suggestion, I'd love to hear it!

My truck is a simple, 2WD, extended cab with the 2.4L motor, automatic transmission, and the truck runs flawlessly. I have appx. 183,000 miles on it. I have all service records and I'm the second owner. The truck is pretty stock (no electric windows, mirrors, no cruise-control, etc.) with a few minor dents in the front and rear bumpers. The interior is cloth and in perfect condition. The only two things that have been added, which are pretty nice, is a solid tonneau covers, and a spray-on bed liner which is about 1/4 inch thick...it's really nice. It has new tires, and needs no maintenance. I drive it every day to and from work. I live in Northern California.

What do you think I should price it at, and what do you think I can "reasonably" expect to get for it? Kelly Blue Book suggests that if I sold it to a Private Party, the expected range would be $4,916 - $7,715 for this vehicle in "Good" condition (https://bit.ly/2HpXPUH), which I think is honest assessment of the condition.

    Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

    Thank you,
    Ed

    Thank you.

Since everybody wants to negotiate, what price do you think I should settle for if I get some interested party at $7,500?

I doubt you'll get that much for it more like $3000-$4000

    Thank you all!

Do you think Craigs List is the best way to advertise? I've never sold a car that way, I've always used the Classified Ad section of my local paper!

Great if he can, but a fickle gardener or pool man is going to want cruise and power windows

Start higher than you want to get. Come down and someone will think they got a good deal! Did that with a boat, wanted 18.5k and asked 20. Buyer offered 18.5k and we both got what we wanted.

Here’s what I tell everyone with this questiom.

It’s only worth what someone is willing (and able) to pay for it. The longer you wait, the more likely you’ll find someone willing to pay the maximum. If you are in a hurry, you won’t get top dollar. If you can wait, find an area that tends to get higher prices, and advertise there, too.

Put it up for sale for, say $7k. If you get 25 offers the first day, you’re not asking enough, if you get no calls in a week, you’re asking too much.

Also remember, just because you put it up for whatever amount, and it becomes clear you’re not asking enough, you are under NO obligation to sell it for that much. Just start a bidding war or take the ad down and start again at a higher price.

    That's great advice...thank you.

Oh, I forgot one other important thing - payment.

What form of payment would you accept or not accept? The only way *I* would take a personal check would be if I go to the buyers bank and have them cash it for me.

    Thoughts?

From experience selling anything on craigslist in California, this is what 90% of buyers are looking for.

You will be overwhelmed by lowballers. Get ready for an influx of texts that will never respond past an initial 'Is it still available?' text. Also, plenty of scammers out there.

You will sell it for a pretty penny, just hold out till it feels right. Cash only.

Get a Google voice phone number to use as your phone number. Don’t use your actual number.
    Good luck with your sale!

Go to CarMax and see what they'll pay cash. That's fairly close to actual trade in.

Then add the value of the sales tax offset to that amount. This becomes your break even price.

Make your starting price 1/2 way between the top of Private Party and Retail.

Selling at mid to lower end of Private Party still puts you well above break even.

Cash. Just cash. Maybe a cashiers check, but they're going with me to the bank to make sure it clears, and that's going to have to be some special circumstance.

Also, don't be fooled by the people who tell you "will you take $XXX if I have cash?" as if having cash is going to convince me to take a lower offer. What ever offer I take, it will be in cash. Don't be fooled by that large stack of cash they waft in front of you.
