has anyone purchased aftermarket black gen 3 headlights with the DRL lights and been happy with the quality? If so could you please share the source and the cost. Thinking about doing the BHLM mod but don't know if I want to go through the pain of splitting the headlights.

    any help appreciated,

    Thanks

I have the Depo. The DLR is brighter than the OEM HL but the beam pattern is better on the OEM HL. I have HID installed and it works for me. If you look around Ebay, they pop up sometimes for less.

most aftermarket headlights have very poor lighting properties, unless you go to the expensive stuff like Kevin's, morimoto or alpharex, expect the lights to be as good as OEM at BEST. At least they will look better though.

True. I bought a set of spyder auto headlights and the halogens are very dim, plus there is no easy way to install LED's either. Other than that, they look great for aesthetic purposes.

I've never understood why anyone would change out headlights for "looks" and sacrifice the light output. Or even worse those tinted covers for headlights/taillights.

You understand the "looks" part, what doesnt make much sense is the part where you have to sacrifice some light output in exchange for looks. And that "sacrifice" is 100% relative to the user. you might drive a lot at night so it wouldn't make sense to you, but if someone hardly ever drives his taco at night (for whatever reason) then you could understand that looks might weigh heavier than light output for them. besides its not like anyone is getting non-functional headlights for just looks.
A lot of us drive tires that sacrifice braking distance, handling, accelertation etc... for looks. Most people who "upgrade their tires" will never go off the pavement, and all terrain tires are not better on pavement than street tires so they upgrade just for "looks" like most things, to each his own...

    That being said...
Some of these aftermarket headlights are ugly AND they don't light up the road....

I for one just HATED the chrome on the stock lights, I sacrificed the light output because I didn't KNOW that the aftermarkets were that bad when I first got them. A lot of people will spend the money, then swap the lights, THEN, and only then do you find out that they are going to sacrifice some light output. You wont read that on any Amazon ads. Which is why it is good for people to ask about it here

I had aftermarket ones that were of the Tacoma beast style. They looked awesome but they sucked for light output. I’m glad I saved my oem lights and had someone local do a BHLM mod on them and couldn’t be happier. I definitely recommend going through Kevin (or do it yourself) for the oem BHLM.
