lots to list, i will get back to this one..
Well if you are dead set on keeping your stock HU, it can be done relatively easily. Just make sure to get an amp with "hi-volt" inputs. This will allow you to use your rear speaker outputs to power your amp. Turn on the Low Pass Filter, and you will have a easy and relatively cheap bass setup in your truck. I was short on cash after spending 2000+ on the speakers and amp and box and carpet and all that good stuff, so I kept the stock hu in there for all of 5 days. It sounded ok, but lacks all of the fine controls and EQ adjustments. Not to mention with a good alpine or pioneer HU, you can position the soundstage pretty well in these trucks. I couldnt be happier with my setup. I am not a "bass head" just someone looking for the best SQ.
Hybrid Car Audio 6.5's in the front,
    Pioneer P4200 amp
    Single Arc Audio 10" sub
    Pioneer Prs-P800 HU
    Lots of Rammat and ensolite
This all equates to a pretty solid system that will play any type of music well. The bass is tight enough for hard rock bass lines, but when i throw in the rap, it shakes the entire cab. I couldn't be happier.

    So in conclusion,
the stock headunit can be used, and you can easily sepearate the highs and lows with the built in filter of any amp. But I think that after a couple weeks (or even days) you may just want to upgrade to the new headunit. Plus the new HU gives you cleaner high volt pre-outs, a nice easy amp control wire, and a good EQ.

I've had my stock head unit with my system for a while now with no complaints. I hate the way aftermarket head units look in the tacoma dash, they dont fit right and none of them match.

LOL. That's the biggest reason I wanted the JBL. I hate to talk on the phone and with a teenage daughter and a wifey, they're always calling to chat. I traded an '07 Acura TL Type S for this, so i got really used to the handsfree. The actually quality of the JBL system was a serious surprise on top of the bluetooth. I think this JBL stock system rocks harder than the Acura...and it was noted for its radio. You could always check eBay. Someone on there somewhere is prolly unloading their "crappy" JBL system. Might get a deal. (I say crappy because I know a few here have bashed it. Must have been their system as mine is seriously really good.)

I really don't want to get rid of my stock HU, so I will see what I can do with a good quality amp and maybe a JL Audio clean sweep sound processor if nessicary.. I was never much to really mess with the fine adjustments anyways, I don't think I have a good ear for it LOL

I don't so much mind the looks but I agree, I do not like the way they look generally.. However, that is not the only reason why I do not want to change.

I just don't talk on the phone much, especially not when im driving. That is a good idea, maybe I can find one for sale that has been taken out of a Tacoma..

I'm also a fan of the JBL. Is it perfect? No. But does it supply over 90% of what I would love to have in an audio system, and I didn't particularly have to do anything to make it that way. No headaches, warrantied and integrated.

Yeah, I realize the sound would be better if I got a new one. But damn, they're ugly. I just can't get past it. I wouldn't mind hearing my set up with a new head unit to see what the difference was. I'd be nice if they made a mod that let you get the sound quality of an aftermarket while keeping the oem one.

Is this a surprise, or are you not recommending that you do this? Granted you will lose the rear speakers, but its a easy way to get the subs power. You can also just throw all the stock hi-volts into the amp, and then run wire back to the speakers, but that is a lot of extra wiring. At that point it may just be easier to throw in a HU and run the 3 sets of RCA's.

i got my box from supercrewsound.com it fits in there snug but i had to cut out the metal mounts for the plastic storage compartments. i have two alpine 10"s. buddy of mine has the pioneer shallow mounts and they sound better.
