OK so my stocker battery is near death. I just know it. Weather is cooling and it's unhappy. So I'm in the market before I get hosed. I need somebody to break down the AGM challenges like I'm 5. Seriously. I read about charging particulars... this and that... now I'm confused. Something about the alt not keeping up with the battery needs. FWIW I have the tow pkg if that helps sort it out.

So help a brother out... please? Thanks.

    Get an AGM
    Install it
Hook a charger up to it once a month if you really want.

You can just stick it in and run it. People freak out about it not getting 100% charge but it’s not nearly as big a deal as people make it out to be. It might just last a couple months less. You can top it off from time to time with a wall charger if desired but not required.

if you want, you can get vf tuner and adjust the charging voltage to give it a bit more juice.

First off, there are two makers of low cost AGM batteries. Johnson controls and Penn Deka. The JC are in most stores as their house brand. They range from $150. to $230. I like the Walmart brand because they cost $140.~$150.
I think the DEKA brand is better. RockAuto has the DECA for $190. + shipping.

I got an AGM battery a week after I bought my 2020 SR. The truck charges the battery just fine. Been in over a year and still reads over 13 volts 20 minutes after the engine is shut down. 12.8 volts is 100% charged.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Sometimes older technology is more than adequate. The latest & greatest almost always involves more $$$. KISS.

I saw the NAPA are Penn batteries too. Was looking at one for ~$190.

Sure, I know. But I had questions about something and wanted to tap the TW brains instead of just guessing. Kind of thrust into the market.

I see, the simple answer is the ECU controls the charging which supplies enough voltage to charge lead acid batteries. It's not enough for an AGM so your AGM will usually only ever sit at 80% capacity. You can buy mods or a RedArc controller that will allow you to fully charge it.

Unless you really really need it you can buy a nice lead acid battery and be fine.

I'm running on the OEM battery with winches, lights, compressor and an ARB Fridge, no issues.

Thanks. Im pretty sure it’s the AZ heat that kills my batteries. All my cars seem to eat them up. Does an AGM handle heat any differently than std batts?

You have some enlightening info to back that statement up?

Can you fit a DEKA group 27 into a Taco if you replace the wires? They don't make a 27F.

    Nothing else to contribute?

You may want to double check your claim of only two manufacturers of low cost AGM batteries before calling others out.

This guy is bullshitting. There is definitely a need for more service charge voltage so you need to change the voltage being supplied by the alternator by editing the ECU values.

Theres a whole vfTuner thread dedicated to AGM tuning...

    Some people on here...

Go troll elsewhere...almost a shame you own a Tacoma.

Our alternators top out at 13.9 volts, and AGM battery likes to see around 14.4.
