I'm looking for a bed extender for my 2003 Double Cab. Are they fairly universal, as far as bed extenders for small trucks go? Or do I need to look for extenders from Tacoma's specifically?
I'm pretty sure one from an F150 wont work, but will one from a 3rd gen Tacoma or even another small truck like a Ranger work?

    Thanks!

It's all about the width and the ability to cut and weld.

Hmmmm..... well ability to cut and weld, not so much. So, should I stick to looking for Tacoma bed extenders? How about differences from one generation Tacoma to another?

and as long as you have a mounting support. I picked one up on CL for ~$100 used a few years ago. they are $225+ new :(

edit: also look for first gen tundra bed extenders, they are the same thing.

They can be taken apart at the center, you have to assemble it with some screws when they come new

they can fully be taken apart into 9 pipes and 2 braces. there are screws holding tight to keep from coming apart. the braces are just plastic. I don't have mine in and no access to it right now otherwise I'd get a pic for OP :(

Hi guys, sorry to bump this thread up.

Just bought a double cab 2003 Tacoma. I used to put my 153" snowmobile in the bed of my old 2009 double cab Tacoma with the 6' bed and it was let's say alright.

With this new (to me) '03 Tacoma and it's 5' bed I'm not too sure it'd be that safe to put it in the bed. I might consider getting a simple trailer.

Although I just came by these tail gate/hitch bed extenders and I'm wondering if it could be alright to haul the sled in the bed. So like that the back of the sled would be supported by it. I would just need to get some ramp.

By the way the tail gate of the Tacoma has been reinforced so it's shouldn't bend like my old one.

What do you guys think ?

    Thanks!

    ^this.

those extenders will never support the weight of the snowmobile and it becomes dangerous.

you can get a 4x8 harbor freight trailer and have it certified, or buy a 5x8 trailer from any major store (Lowes, HD, TS, etc) and just register it. I paid ~$600 for it and removed the mesh to use 2x10 planks.

I've towed a few thousand miles with it so far.

Word of advice though. Upgrade those brakes to the Tundra ones before you haul this thing in any fashion. the TBU (Tundra Brake Upgrade) is on my immediate list this year even if I don't haul as often as I used to.

Thanks for the advices. Yes the previous owner already did the Tundra brakes upgrade!

Still considering the trailer but I wanted not to go that way at first cause sometimes we have to get off the road with the sled and climb in the mountains so a trailer in these conditions is not ideal.

Neither is trying to load/unload from the bed of a truck ;p

If you forego advice and load it in the bed, make sure the heaviest part is actually "IN" the bed and not hanging outside

you're also going to want to beef up the rear suspension or put airbags on to hold the extra weight

In those conditions, IMO stuffing 10 pounds of sled in a 5 pound bag (a Tacoma) is not exactly ideal either.

You can easily get some mud terrains or all terrains for the trailer. A trailer keeps your center of gravity lower, and keeps your vehicle in better balance (doesn't unload the front wheels as you would end up doing when a sled is hanging off the ass end of your truck).
