So the dealer is required to inspect and perform whatever maintenance is required, or comply with inspections related to service campaigns, before selling? That would be ideal but I've never known that to be the case outside of safety recalls.

If not, the dealer could just claim they also were not aware of the frame corrosion/damage and the burden would be in the buyer to provide evidence otherwise, just as with a private party sale.

I don’t think that’s what the above is saying.

This is the reason I believe.

they are protected by state and federal consumer protection laws because the dealer is a business.

Unless those laws require the selling dealer to comply with the frame inspection service campaign they would not protect the buyer.

I wouldn’t even bother with a frame repair shop. If there’s one spot in the frame that is corroded that deep the entire frame needs to be replaced. Absolutely no chance of saving it. I would be looking at trading or a complete frame replacement. Not worth the money to even touch that frame.

I think state and federal consumer protection laws would prevent a dealership from selling a unsafe vehicle period. The law is not going to mandate exactly what they need to do to fix it. It’s unsafe, buyer would be protected if bought from dealer.

A badly corroded frame is definitely a safety concern so that would be something that the law should protect consumers from. Thanks for helping me get there.

Don't most states require a vehicle inspection before being registered and tagged?

Seems unlikely that rusted frame would pass any inspection to be road worthy.

I don’t know about most states, but in SC there are zero inspections for vehicle registration.

Seems that lets the seller off the hook for any liability, if it passes your state inspection and considered road worthy.

I think this is probably the end result, I had a Datsun 280ZX with a rotted piece of frame and a floorboard needing some work. Found out from a frame shop that it would ultimately just be chasing the stuff unless I replaced it all.

So I'm leaning toward just selling it as is. Any guesses on what I should expect to get out of it?

By selling it as is, I meant I would relay the issue

Was it a Toyota dealership, a non-Toyota manufacturer dealership, or just a used car dealer? Be interesting if it was a Toyota dealership.

Tell the guy you want your money back or you'll get a lawyer, every state is different but this is just out right theft, that's the biggest hole I've ever seen in a taco frame! Mine was replaced with a 12mm hole, that dealer who saw it should be shot!

Yep, it’s pretty suspicious the seller sold the truck so quick.
