Guys, notice the silver (not gold or brass) buttons, rank, sleeve stripes, leg stripes, and uniform trim. This silver signifies an auxiliary/academy uniform (civil air patrol, coast guard auxiliary, private military academy, etc), where prior active service insignia is often allowed intermixed with auxiliary/academy ribbons or insignia which have no relationship to active duty ribbons or insignia.

This is not a defense of the outright validity of any rank or insignia shown, only an explination of the uniform and possible explination of the insignia.

Here is a telling comment on the newspaper's website:

" To make this story even more unbelievable….How could Mr. Truitt have completed seven tours in Iraq between 2001 and 2006, when he went to Wasco State Prison in 2004 for an 16-month sentence on a variety of drug and theft charges. It’s all a matter of public record!"

I can't believe the so called journalist didn't do any checking at all

UPDATE: Looks like Jason Truitt is going to get what he deserves. He has NRA Lawyers on his ass.

Story Appears to be Full of Fabrications
    Cortez Journal
    Journal Staff Report

An article in Saturday’s Cortez Journal contained a number of what appear to be false assertions by a man who claims to be a military veteran.

The story about the annual Hunt for Heroes event featured a California man named Jason Truitt, who claimed to be a former U.S. Navy SEAL. Further, Truitt claimed that he served seven tours in Iraq and Afghanistan where he was wounded several times and also taken prisoner.

Readers from outside the area who are familiar with Truitt, contacted the Journal to report the assertions were complete fabrications.

Since military records are not readily available to the public or the press, there is no timely way to confirm Truitt’s military background or if he is a military veteran.

As part of the Journal’s efforts to correct the story, an edited version of the story was posted that eliminates all references to Truitt. If Truitt’s claims are proven to be true, the original story will be re-posted.

Most involved with the story believe that Truitt fabricated his military history.

Bob Luna, who has hosted the Hunt for Heroes event for the past five years, said he is not allowing this situation to slip past.

“Who would do this? We’re not letting this guy get away with this. We’re going for the gun, the money and pressing charges,” he said.

Luna said financial assistance was given to Truitt so he could make the trip. A new hunting rifle was also given to him as part of the program.

Marc Steinke, a representative for the National Rifle Association, said that there are a lot of people in shock, and there will be consequences.

“We’re getting it sorted out at NRA headquarters. It’s nobody’s fault but Truitt’s. There will be lawyers involved. Penalties will have to be paid,” he said.

See Thursday’s Journal for more on this story.

It is the National Defense Service Medal. The star says he has two. One would be for the present conflict. The other one would have been for service for the Gulf War. He hasn't been in long enough to have been awarded two.

Follow up article from the original paper on Jason Twit..I mean Truitt.

Man uses fake story to secure local Hunt for Heroes trip
    By Brandon Mathis
    Journal Staff Writer

A good deed intended to reward military veterans with the Colorado hunting experience of a lifetime has left donors feeling duped and a possible felon in possession of a hunting rifle donated by the National Rifle Association.

Jason Andrew Truitt, a self-proclaimed Navy SEAL who participated in this year’s Hunt for Heroes, led by local outfitter Bob Luna, apparently is a fraud.

Truitt reportedly said he was a Navy SEAL who had completed seven tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, was wounded several times, was missing in action for several months and was detained as a prisoner of war. Navy SEAL watchdogs say none of those claims is true, and there is no record of him in a database listing of SEAL Team members back to 1962 and predecessor units dating back to 1943.

Furthermore, a man with the same name served prison time for a felony conviction in California.

According to a Kern County, Calif., sheriff’s department spokesperson, Jason Truitt, of Bakersfield, Calif., spent 16 months in Wasco State Prison on drug and vehicle-theft charges, at the same time Truitt claimed to be on active duty as a SEAL.

Federal and state laws in both Colorado and California prohibit convicted felons from possessing firearms, including the Wetherby .300 magnum hunting rifle presented to Truitt by the National Rifle Association for the Colorado hunt.

According to Mark King, who is from Norwood, Colo. and currently works for the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the rifle is now in the possession of the NRA.

Truitt may also be in trouble for fraudulently receiving the services associated with the hunt and the elk that was donated to him.

His claims to be a SEAL also may not go unpunished. The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 prohibits individuals from falsely representing themselves as having received any U.S. military decoration or medal. Violations are federal misdemeanors, punishable by incarceration.

Video of Jason from his local TV Station. Looks like he go more publicity then he expected. Hard to believe his dad blamed it on the Group that paid for his hunting trip for not checking his son's military records before they offered him his trip.

His dad claimed he bumped his head in the Navy and that's why he has these problems and why he only served for 8 months. I'll bet anything his discharge was drug related.

Can't wait to see his DD214. I'm sure it has been requested and will be posted soon.

first off he would not have been able to get into the military with tattoos like that and if he got them while in they prolly would have discharged him for distruction of military property. second off he is out of uniform any person in the military has or should have enough respect to wear the entire uniform not just half of it. third why is this pos wearing a army uniform with navy name tapes? i know im not in the navy and i dont know muich about the seals but i can tell you that that is a army uniform he is wearing a black under shirt that is wrong they are tan the tattoos on his hand are a nogo the glasses hanging from his neck nogo if im not mistaken i can see hair coming out under his hat thats longer than 3inches thats a nogo and a big one the fact that he is wearing his uniform and holding a rifle that is not a military rifle and he is with two civis is the biggest nogo that overall to me is very disrepectfull
