Another rusting frame issue? Just Got A Notice From Toyota.

I thought the rusting frames was just an issue on the second gen Tacoma's but I guess not. Just got a letter from Toyota yesterday that states models from 2011-2017 is prone to frame corrosion. Said they are going to warrant the frames for 12 years from the date of purchase with no mileage limitations. You would think after the issues with the second gens and all the frames they had to replace they would have done something to correct this. I guess not. Bummer!

 

I also do not understand how they’re having trouble with the 3rd gen frames after having the whole 2nd gen frame debacle.

 

Im guessing they did a cost check on it. The cost of rustproofing all the frames vs the frames that would need to be replaced. Remember there are only a few states that have these rust issues. In those states only some of the trucks will rust out and need a replacement, the rest will either be totaled, junked before the rust gets it, or the customer will take it to a rust proofing place themselves.

 

Toyota lists 21 states in the notice.

 

So more than half of the states dont need it, im guessing many of those have a higher market share than the 21 rust states.

 

Anyone not coating their frame then acting surprised 5-10 yrs later when their Toyota is rusting is just playing victim.

Recalls aren't issued because a company cares about you. They are issued after heavy research and legal advice about which choice is cheaper.

It is cheaper for toyota to issue a recall than it is for them to make changes to their production.

The recall might have even been planned before they rolled out the 3rd gens

I got one of those at the beginning of the year. I won't let those fuckers touch my frame nor let them spray anything on it. I am not worried about the rust or rotting etc, as I'm the guy in the middle of Winter scrubbing my Kings so they stay looking new.

 

This makes no sense. It shouldn't matter WHERE your truck was bought new. If you buy in nice, southern Arizona, then move to northern Minnesota where your frame rusts out in a few years, Toyota won't cover it?

 

2cd gen and 3rd gen are pretty much identical. I've had both on a hoist, 2012 and 2017. I don't see any difference.

 

Read the letter above. It says ”operated in”. Not “purchased”.
