Yes, I know....tailgates have been discussed many times. What I want to know is, what year did they change them to the heavier duty/ reinforced tailgate. 08 or 09?

I taken apart my 09 tailgate to install the Pop & Lock and I can say that this thing has very little structure. I don't believe they changed the 09's at all. If they did, they done a very poor job.

I think late 09 they changed the design. Jus under the top lip there is an additional channel. Not much added support but it is an upgrade.

My truck is an 06' and I had Toyota repalce my gate about a year ago for the TSB.

My 2010 is much heavier than my 2007 was so I think it was changed with the 2009 model when the camera showed up.

    .

I have a 2009 and this tailgate is very weak ... it reminded me of my 2004 Tacoma. IMO, both are about the same ... very weak.

Edit ... my 2004 tailgate (both sides metal with bed liner panel ) was actually stronger (than the 2009).

I slide a bed length(42"x6') piece of plywood under my bed mat and when I need to load a motorcycle I just pull the plywood over the tailgate and spread the love!
