Thanks Steve. Yeah the main service is in the basement so not in line of site. I'll see if I can pick up a 30 amp disconnect this weekend. Compressor won't be in the garage very long anyhow, going to move it to the detached garage once I get that built.

You can always take the disconnect off and use it in the pole building later.

Looking forward to see the shop when it's all built and setup

So the disconnect is necessary because you are hardwiring to the compressor? Would the switch on the compressor not be considered a disconnect of sorts? Or you need to be able to turn off power to the line in the room?

The Dakars tired and flat? Or just want more flexy?

All equipment that is powered needs to have some sort of disconnecting means. If it has a cord and plug that's a disconnecting means. If it has a switch on it, it needs to be a lockable switch, for it to be considered a disconnecting means.
If the switch on the compressor can be locked out than that's good enough, but most I've seen aren't lockable. A breaker is a disconnecting means as long as it's in line of site of the equipment.

Now I have a commercial and industrial electrical background. So the residential stuff to me is kinda, meh, if it was my house I probably wouldn't put one in, is that right? No, but I'm not stupid and won't be working on it while somones flipping breakers.

How long of a run is that 10 gauge wire? I ran 8/3 from my breaker panel to my shed to backfeed the house with my generator during outages. It was around 90' so the voltage drop on 8 gauge was worth the little extra $.

When are you expecting to get started on the pole barn? If you need any help just let us know!

This VVVVV. But I may swap out my dakars eventually for some chevys, the Dakars are 4 years old and have seen their fair share of abuse.

Yeah I have to check the compressor but I don't believe it has a disconnect, I think the motor starter just is directly wired and starts on pressure so there would be no means of disconnecting it from the garage. I guess another option would be to make a male/female plug setup and plug it in versus hard wire but that would be just as much work as the disconnect and the compressor weighs close to 500 lbs so I wouldn't be moving it LOL.

Well it's only another 10 feet from where the water heater was wired to, so maybe 50 feet total from the box. I get 240 volts at the outlet even when my welder is fired up the drop was minimal for the extra distance. When I do the service to the pole barn I will be running either a 100 or 150 amp sub panel out there and I'm having my electrician wire it since it will need to get inspected by the township and I don't want to fuck it up, he will take care of the wire size and the transition from outdoor wire to the indoor. I expect to start sometime in March once the weather breaks a bit, the only help I will need is for you guys to come over and drink beer and help me work on the 4runner :D

Good to know. I plan on installing some shit in the garage but was planning on wiring the plugs anyway. No need for me to hardwire anything.

My mail man hates me, delivered today was roughly 150 lbs of metal LOL. Swag HD finger brake press kit and their arbor plates

The Swag plates compared to the cheap chinese pot metal ones that come with the HF 20T press

I'll work on welding it up next week, now I should be able to make any bracket or bend up to 20" wide and 1/4" in the press

So did you have the 20 ton HF press? If so did it work halfway decent for the shade tree mechanic? Or was it junk and need to skip it and go straight to high dollar stuff. If I got a press it would likely only be used to swap uniballs or press in/out bushings

Also, looks like you are getting a nice tool stash going for your own fab shop.

I've got the HF one, got it on sale for like $130. I haven't had any issues with it, works fine for the occasional use. There's not much to go wrong other than the jack, but you can always upgrade that.

Yep a couple more tools to go, would like to be able to cage the truck at my own place. Got a lead on a bender this week I'm going to check out. All that's left after that would be a tube notcher and I should be able to build anything half decent

My HF press jack popped on the first use . I took just the jack back and exchanged it no problems and it has worked fine since.

Unloaded the air compressor. This bitch was heavy. Just need to finish the wiring and plumb up s regulator. 17 cfm at 90 psi should handle anything I throw at it, not to mention it was free :D
