Hello! I have a 1992 Toyota Pickup DLX 4x4. 194,xxx on the clock. 22re with w56 5 speed transmission. Lately I have been noticing a noise kind of like a whining sound coming from the either the transmission or the engine. It gets louder ar RPMs go up. Quieter as I go up in gears. Seems to go away when clutch is engaged. Any ideas? Truck isn't driven much, just noticed it seems to be getting worse as time goes on.

Troubleshooting over the internet is somewhat of a crap shoot, but if the noise goes away with the clutch pushed in it is usually the input shaft bearing on the transmission going out.

Ok. Got a second opinion. Definitely under the hood. Still there when clutch engaged but not as loud. Thinking water pump, as that could also explain the coolant leaks I've been having.

Not sure what it would have to do with the clutch, but under the hood whining sound I would check the idler pulley bearing.

Clutch engagement is independent of everything under the hood. To me if you hear a wiring noise when the clutch pedal is depressed and gets much quieter when the clutch is let out (engaged) it sounds like a throw out bearing. It could be you have something else going on as well.
