On my 2019 MT, you have to press the unlock button on the key, which is a key and fob in one. No keyless option.

I'm no expert, this is what I know. These are the keys I bought, used a couple have more to sell. They're the H chip, I had them cut at my hardware store from the original key. Did not program them. They unlock my doors manually and start the engine. But, since they're not programmed they don't lock and unlock and arm the truck with the actual buttons.

One day I'll get around to ordering the Techstream and program my keys.

    Hope this makes sense.

I did the same thing for the same reason, except paid the dealership $10 for a non chip key.

He told me if I ever tried to start the truck with the non chip key, the truck would have to be towed to them and reprogrammed or something like that. Said it would cost at least a grand.

Holy crap! Is this true? Can anyone that doesn't work at a dealership confirm this? That is crazy. "[Inserts wrong key] Dammit, I've totaled my new truck!!!"

Guy was full of spit. I’ve tried to start my truck with the blank key several times, just to make sure someone can’t off with it, and that never happened to me. The truck starts one time, then if you try to put it in gear, it shuts the engine off. If you try to start it again, the starter turns, but the engine doesn’t fire up. Use a chipped key and the truck starts right up.

Is everything the same on the 2018's as the 16's?

I'm not brave enough to try it.

You can just pull the vault out and throw in your hitch, the combo pin can also be used for towing. Vaults are on sale right now and thanks for the mention guys!

Have you tried starting your ride with the actual chip key in proximity? Like in the center console? I've already toasted one of my 2 keys and I was thinking of just leaving the second one in the console or glove box and using a non chip key, I was not sure it would work though.

And where do I secure the hitch vault containing my spare emergency keys then? Lock them in the truck? Counter-intuitive. My last theft happened on the boat ramp, when my trailer was locked to my truck. That is the very risk exposure I am trying avoid. I am looking for a secure way and secure location that does not require my attention to security that your scenario would require. That hitch vault is great for people that don't use the hitch. For those of us that use our hitches on a regular basis the hitch vault is a non-starter.

I’ll look into it, what are the dimensions of the tubing on your boat trailer?

I do this, but tape it to the back side of my license plate. Then all you have to have is a coin usually to undo the screws on the plate if you don't have a screwdriver handy.

Thanks, but putting it on the boat trailer doesn't solve my problem. Besides my boat trailer channels are not c channels, they are square tubing that is sealed except for drain holes.

I got to work one day and realized I forgot my key on the counter at the house when I was getting out of the car. At first I thought the car had just started that morning b/c it was close enough to the house. But after I was able to restart it at work and realized that my spare fob was in the center console and had been there since I bought the truck. After testing, I was able to lock the doors with one fob outside of the truck but if I left it far enough away from the truck i could just walk up and the truck would still unlock b/c the other fob was in there.

Well if you cant store on your truck or your trailer, how about a dry box hidden on your boat?

Thieves might be unable to steal your truck but might want to get rid of the Lic. plate of their current stolen car and steal you plates, only to find the key to your truck!!!
