Ok so I found a regular cab I really like just need some advise on if the year was good or not. I talked them down and its a 2 owner. Any insight would be appreciated. also how long will a 2.7 last compared to the 4.0?

I've had 2 2006 2.7 5-speed work trucks and they're the gold standard I use to compare other trucks to.

They are inexpensive. Strong. Reliable. Easy to work on. Get good gas mileage. Absolutely rock solid.

HOWEVER, go in with your eyes open.

They are work trucks. They don't have bells and whistles. They aren't "pretty". The aren't fast. Lots of folks hate the seat comfort level (I grew up driving work trucks in the paper mills so I actually am right at home on the fleet-order bench seat). They ride like work trucks. You can beat them like a rented mule and they'll keep right on bringin' you home.

If you want a soft, pretty, "get me pussy" ride, you'll hate it. If you try to drive it like a supercharged drifter, you'll hate it. It isn't an SUV.

If you want a dependable, reliable, cheap to insure and operate (relatively, of course), and take-it-to-the-bank "Yo....hang back, I got this" performance that makes you just say "Eh...throw it in the back of the truck, I'll wait for you there", it's the ride you want.

Here's my Fuelly page, you can see for yourself how well the gas mileage can get.

This is 5 days a week back and forth to work driving, and farting around on weekends. A daily driver truck.

    http://www.fuelly.com/driver/xaks

I enter mileage on the tank level only. Meaning, a full tank burn. These are full tanks of gas being used to the get the mileage listed, not just single select road trips.

Around 110,000 or 120,000 miles' worth, I think

I also had a 2008 of the exact same stats, and it was the same damned truck, for all practical intents and purposes. Sadly, she was taken from me by a cast off semi wheel (rim and all)...that's the red one listed there.

Looks like someone put power mirrors in it, if I recall regular cabs never came with them.

Gas mileage honestly isn't the greatest with the 4 cylinder 4x4... I get 20~ish combined

Yea, it's the extra drag & weight of the hardware I think that brings it down

    Mine were all 4x2s

I don't drive much so mpg doesn't matter much. Its nice but i live only a few miles from work so the MPGs will be bad anyways.

Bought mine at 18000 miles and now have 86000 miles. This is my DD and weekend worker. The only issue I've ever had is the driveshaft "growl" due to a slightly loose slip yoke, which affects a good amount of reg cab owners (hit or miss), though doesnt seem to cause any long term damage. I also think I might have a wheel bearing on its way out, but that's not an issue limited to reg cabs. Other than that, clutch, engine, transmission, frame, and body are still in great shape. As others have said, it's a really simple truck with no frills, and in my opinion, the 2TR is one of the most reliable engines out there.

I picked her up today. Got her for 12k otd with 118k miles. Was a lot but there hard to come by here. So far she drives great no weird vibes or wanders. Had a 2 hour drive home so got to enjoy it. The previous owner didn't take off the mud flaps he cut them which doesn't make much sense.

when i mean cut he cut them all the way up to the flares. Would of been easier to undo a few bolts and look cleaner. Oh well whats done is done mud flaps are expensive for these things. How will anyone know I drive a cool 4x4 though lol. Ill go buy one of those sweet 4x4 stickers from auto zone:rofl:

Keep an eye out of the for sale areas. Lots and lots of popular parts get traded around there quite often. I've bought at least a dozen times from folks on this site over the years.

I inspected the frame before purchase. It originally was in NJ. It has surface rust with some flaking but not too terrible. Might just wire brush the whole bottom and use some undercoating product. Any recommendations on the product?
