So it looks like the Canadian economy will be experiencing an extended period of sluggishness, keeping our dollar low. Our current government has structured our economy to rely heavily on high oil prices, and so here we are. The real bummer for me is the timing - I was gearing up to get my long travel build started (had allotted about 12.5K) but with the exchange, I'm not willing to pay a 20-25% premium on all my parts.

Any others in the same boat? Bought my 07 used two years ago (didn't want to buy new since I knew I'd be using it for an overland build) and have been researching suspension options ever since. Needless to say I was pretty stoked to have everything ready, but it's looking like I'll have to be patient. In the meantime I guess I'll do what I can to ready the truck for when the time comes, been considering taking it in for a valve clearance adjustment as they're pretty noisy compared to other tacos I see around. Maybe rust-proof my frame etc.

Been considering investing some of my budget into silver, hopefully make a few more bucks for the build.. anyways, just had to vent my frustration and figured I'd see if anyone was having a similar experience. Cheers.

If you look at more than just the Canada / US exchange rate , you'll find most currencies are down against the US Greenback right now

I picked the wrong time to build my aftermarket stereo in my double cab . Purchasing individual components out of the states to get the best build has been very costly to the point where I could have taken the truck in to a stereo shop here in Canada and had similar system installed for 1/2 the price . US fund exchange , duty and shipping is a killer . Trying to keep the rest of my build on this side of the map . If you look hard enough , you can get the products or similar on this side .

True enough.. but the outlook for CAD to USD seems to be a prolonged period of rates similar to what we're seeing now..

Was planning to go with All Pro long travel kit, CVs, bumper and skids.. I know I could find the armor on this side of the border, but as far as long travel kits go I haven't found anything being distributed in Canada.

Was true 6 months ago, and even more true now that we can see it, the USD is holding strong against other world currencies and the US is currently in a deflationary period. Domestic goods are cheap right now.

During these deflationary times, CASH IS KING!

For countries experiencing inflation (weak currency), PM's, land/property, fine art, and other tangible items are good for wealth preservation.

but I missed the boat I think.. since the loonie is now trading below .80 USD it's basically near its floor.. I can't see it drop significantly lower than that. So this isn't really a good time to put CAD into PM

    Lots...
Well, I'm not Canadian, but I'm Mexican and feel the same way!!!

The rate was 13.50 pesos per USD (when it was a bad day).... Today it's 15.8 pesos per USD...

Meaning that the lift I was going to buy at 1,250USD is now almost 3,000 pesos more expensive!!!

I filled out an order for a 3" lift coilovers ucas & Dakars. Was 1950 USD which was bad enough then I clicked where it said I'm Canadian and bam 650+ before shipping and border taxes. Almost makes one consider just buying in Canada. I want to buy one of those relentless bumpers but shudder to think of the shipping costs

Canada sold 21,851 ounces of gold in February. The Canadian government how holds just 77 ounces. That can't help.

Canada has been selling off its gold steadily for years , its not a new thing . The dollar was at par not long ago and we were selling off our gold then too

From the link I poted above

"Back in the 1960s, Canada held more than 1,000 tonnes of gold. But it began steadily selling off its hoard, and by 2003, the country had just 3.4 tonnes.

Now, Canada has less than one tonne."

The Canadian dollar was at par with the US dollar as recently as 2012

Until the switch is made to digital /non cash currency, cash will be in the past, and negative interest rates will be applied to your bank balance during slow economic times to encourage spending. It's already being tried and it'll be universal sooner than later.
