I was talking to @TenBeers last night and he said I should stay away from liquid cooled because they will leak over time. I've also been told that I should go with liquid cooling because I would get much better heat dissipation.

    Thoughts?

Cheap AIOs tend to use cheap components that leak. I find the higher end stuff from companies like Fractal Design to be very reliable. Almost all AIOs are made in the same place, but they are not created equal.

Custom loops are great if you use good components from reputable companies and use pure distilled water with a corrosion/algae inhibitor without any colouring. That being said, they do take maintenance and leaks are not unheard of.

A Noctua Threadripper cooler is fine, just don't expect to get 100% all core max boost performance with it. Threadripper pushes just enough heat to start to overwhelm the heat pipes in the Noctua design. It's not so much a fault as it is Threadripper continuing to evolve as more cores at higher boost speeds are added.

An Epyc based build would be fine under a Noctua since they don't boost nearly as high.

I’d go up to 280mm or 360mm AIO. That’s just me though, I like to keep things under 80c even on high draw chips. A 240mm AIO like that would be okay but about 30% less capable.

I’ve had some bad luck with Corsair AIOs in the last couple of years. That’s just me though.

    Yeah.
I don't think @Pchop wants to mess with custom loops, lol. I was actually surprised that the Noctua TR4 cooler looks quite a bit less capable than what they have for AM4. I just threw a Deep Cool AIO 360mm in the cart for comparison since it was the first one I saw with TR4 support, but yeah, would probably spend a little more on a quality AIO if it was my build.

In the end, he's likely going to go through a custom builder anyway. I was mainly looking to understand what a beast like that should actually cost. Thinking $7K minimum for that level of build.

I also looked at the Boxx and Puget Systems. I initially thought about going with a builder that specializes in the design side but this is going to go in my house and I want a certain amount of form in the build, not just a black tower sitting there which is why I am looking at a gaming builder, Xidax you saw, I'm also waiting to get a quote with the same shit from XotixPC if they will even do it.

    Yeah.
Check out originpc.com. I configured an almost identical system to the parts I had on Amazon, total was $8,258.

If you're going to pay for paste I'd go for new formulation NT-H1, which stays stable the longest and posts good results, or Kryonaut from Thermal Grizzly, since it's one of the top rated and tested pastes that's available on Amazon.

Like someone else said, Arctic Silver had its day but it's not a high rated paste anymore.

Noctua's paste for just in general. Thermal Grizzly if you want better performance and are willing to spend more for it. Noctua you can get in 3.5gram size vs Thermal Grizzly is usually 1g.

Theres other options but those are what I go with these days

I just looked at them as well actually. I'm going to hit them up to see if they can do what I am looking for as well. And $8258 is a bit over my budget, trying to stay at or below $4k.

    Yeah.
Well, a Threadripper system is probably not going to be even close. I configured a Ryzen 9 3900X, 64MB RAM, and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and it came in at $4,197 (NVMe boot drive, 2TB SSD data drive). Changing to a Threadripper adds over $1K to that.

I have the 011 Air sitting in my Amazon cart for next time I want to build a computer. How was it building in there? Looks like lots of room. What CLC did you go with? And does your GPU have THREE power inputs?!?! I've never seen more than two 8 pins before.

Building a PC is getting expensive. I think the 4970k setup I had was probably $1200~1500.

Right now my bottleneck is my firewalla blue. Without it, I can get ~850 up and down. I have a firewalla gold on pre-order through indegogo, it will handle 1Gb+ speeds easily. The firewalla makes it easy for me to keep track of what the kids are doing. Unfortunately I get lots of alerts from my oldest sons devices...

My FiOS gigabit dropped from $104 to $79 recently. Was happy to see that.

Seems like everything is expensive nowadays. I'm trying to piece a budget gaming build together for my brother in law, but parts are scarce and carry a covid premium right now.

Building in the 011 is great. My only complaint is that they didn't make the USB-C 3.2 cable long enough. The case is deceptively narrow. I wouldn't try to fit a tall tower cooler in it. My PC doesn't use a custom loop. I just use a Fractal Design 360mm AIO.

Yeah, so there are three 2080Ti cards with triple PCI-E power inputs. The MSI Lightning, MSI Gaming Trio X, and the EVGA Kingpin. I have the second card in that company. By having a third power connector it allows for two things. One, for normal overclocking it means that the auxiliary on board power for things like RGB and the fans doesn't limit my total power supply. That means the card can give full rated overclocking power to the GPU itself without any auxiliary power losses. Second, if I ever went crazy I could load one of the custom Bios flashes that people have created an feed my GPU 75 watts more power than nVidia designed it for .
