For explaining his builds and how to guides Jay is great. One reason I like him is because he'll do something like a video on the Keyboard he bought for his own house just because his twitter fans were curious. If anything I'd say watch out for videos that seem like he's ranting. Odds are he's going a lot further than the truth, that's just how he is.

    Phil chooses the music lol.

I actually think Jay should let Phil co-host more. Just like how Linus really took off once Anthony, Riley, etc started to host episodes on their own Jay has to let Phil do more.

It was nice Linus realized he had to pass the buck around a bit with how his company does videos. He really wasn't the same for a period till he made the "I should retire" video

Sweet. I'm first in line for my local brick and mortar for a Asus Tuf 3090. They switched to backorder preorders today and I managed to get first in at one of their locations.

    Memory Express.
Obviously they have no idea when they will get one and I put zero money down, but the associate I ordered from said the Asus Rep told them about a week before they see the first batch land in Canada.

I snagged an EVGA XC3 on Newegg last night, should be here pretty quick. They released several in a row last night gigabyte and asus, then the EVGA popped and I got it.

I was looking at MSI and EVGA but it looks like only Asus is using all high frequency tolerant capacitors. Maybe it means nothing but I decided to go that direction after the Igor's labs report.

So I read an Asus Strix 3090 review today and I think I understand better what's going on with the 3090 in games. It should be 30-40% better than the 3080 by most people's math but it's only 10-20% IRL. The trick is the power limit. Asus received permission from nVidia to raise the board power limit on the Strix by roughly 10%. The performance in games jumped by about 5% on average. Since the 3080 and 3090 have such close power limits it appears that the 3090 hits it's nVidia controlled power limit before it hits its true potential limit. The 3080 is able to hit its potential within its power limit.

Mine is on order. I just went with the TUF version. I'll probably have it in 10-14 days.

Hardware Unboxed is refuting game crashes is due to caps, they say they are seeing it on all cards.

I’m not too worried about it, I can do some benchmarking and sell it for a premium if I am not happy right now.

The influencer review TUF, MSI, and EVGA cards may of had different capacitor arrangements than the consumer cards so I wouldn't be surprised if this story goes back and forth for a while. EVGA and Asus both came out and said they had issues with 6 POSCAP designs, but that they still sent some of those models out to reviewers, which makes me think at least some of the issues on the Zotac cards has to do with that since they do seem to have more complaints than anyone else right now. Keep in mind every reviewer, including Hardware Unboxed, only has a single card at most from each manufacturer so their mileage may vary compared to a consumer card.

I'm sure a big part of this mess is the same as the 20 series launch. Lack of a rail that can handle 350 watts (lots of PSUs use multiple 250 watt rails, which isn't good for a device with single draws over that), cheap PSUs, bad drivers, windows mishandling card idle requests, etc are probably all factors in games crashing. People always forget about the drawbacks of multi-rail PSUs because for the last decade or so the rails were always bigger than the single device draw. However anyone who built systems back in the 2000s or earlier knows multiple rail PSUs can cause issues with high draw devices. I wouldn't also be surprised if some reviewers have yet to bench the cards on better PSUs versus cheap PSUs. The PSU shortage has people using some sketchy unbranded or low rated 1K watt models. I decided to keep my Corsair HXi 750 for my 3090 instead of upgrading simply because I know I can rely on that PSU for stable power and a single rail design.

My decision to go with the TUF was based on the unboxing videos. Honestly, the higher end EVGA shroud looks like pooh IMHO. Not sure why they needed to put that red ring around the shroud. The TUF not only offers a better capacitor design for possibly cleaner power and likely higher clocks once I throw it under water in a year or two, but it also feels more understated with a nice shroud and back plate design. I'm not sure when I'll go to a waterblock so I want a good shroud and backplate for the time being.

    TL;DR

There is probably more going on than just a poor capacitor design choice that is causing cards to crash to the windows main screen. While AIBs going cheap may, MAY, be a part of the issue the real fault lies with nVidia. This whole launch was so rushed nVidia and the AIBs did not have time to test the cards with the nVidia provided drivers for long enough to work out the bugs. For me it's okay if my 3090 is a bit glitchy because honestly I'll be using it mostly for work and can go back to my 2080Ti if the card is really bad. Otherwise I'd recommend folks wait for AMD, because it sounds like they stuck to their launch date to make sure that the RX 6000 cards have a much better launch than this.

More I think about it, I’m probably just gonna sell mine after playing with it a bit. Give em time to figure it out. I may just go FE if I can get one and slap a block on it. Just too easy to make a profit.

Hell maybe the hydrocopper version I wanted may come out eventually.
