wow amd finally got good with single thread speeds. "slow clap"

wondering if intel will see this as a threat or just continue to shoot them selves in the foot.

Well they did try to take some thunder away yesterday by mentioning Rocket Lake will come out in Early 2021. Given Rocket Lake is still 14 nm I can't see it getting all the way up to AMD. We will find out soon I'm sure.

I mean what can they do at this point? Their CPUs are basically buddy heaters running binary code. It'll be the same cores, pulling even more power, putting out even more heat, for a tiny bump in Ghz.

Glad to see AMD tentatively taking the lead. Crazy that just a year and a half ago intel was selling an 8 core non hyper-threaded CPU for over $300 and look at what you can get at that price point now.

I am disappointed to see the price bump. I paid $330 out the door for my 3700x shortly after launch, so $450 for 5800x with no cooler is rough. But I wasn't planning on upgrading on this cycle anyway. Whatever is the 2nd gen series of CPUs running DDR5 will be my next upgrade unless the 3950x plummets in price soon :spending:.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I won't give up my 3950X for a 5950X when DDR5 is likely ready to go with Zen 4. AMD also mentioned Zen 4 is tracking as promised with the design basically complete which should mean it'll announce this time next year.

AMD has the right to ask a premium now IMHO. They have the leadership position if the numbers they showed are true.

Doesn't look like AMD was using ray tracing in the demo, possibly. Who knows. Still looks impressive.

Update: I ended up returning the I9-10980xe. I got it for $741 and it wasn't worth it. It ran HOT, like 100 Celsius spike on full load and then throttling. That is with Water-cooling. The Noctua D15 I tried ran the same temps. The actual cores heated up under load, regardless of the CPU cooler. Load stopped and heat idled in the upper 40's C.

    Thank God for MicroCenter.

Ended up going Team Red. 3950x, Asus B550M-plus tuf wifi. Using it dual boot Windows and Mac Catalina.

I know the new ones are coming out, but couldn't wait.

Glad microcenter took care of you. Those Intel HEDT CPU's need serious cooling. Even noctua doesnt really rate the D15 as being able to handle them at full boost for extended periods

I was using water-cooling for the 10980xe with a 360mm rad. Yeah, it ran that hot.

I’ve been getting a few errors the last few weeks when I would boot up Warzone and finally tonight it said that it couldn’t update while checking files and I couldn’t get it to check files without an update so I said screw it and un-installed it to re-install it. My HDD/SSD won’t be very happy, 252GB of data at 350+ Mbps.

This be an appropriate venue to discuss monitor upgrades or should I make my own thread?

There's some good discussion back around post 2700 in this thread (plus and minus there). Depending what you are looking for might be worth checking that bit of talk out

OK, let me set the scene because I'm pretty sure I'm in a unique situation here.

I have two 24" 1080p monitors at my desk run off of a RX580. I VPN into work using Remote Desktop Protocol. The short of it means that one monitor gets dedicated to the remote work computer, the other personal. On the personal monitor I will do research, YouTube/video, shitpost, and browse. On the work computer I'm in as many as seven different programs at once to do my job, and I frequently have to Alt+Tab between programs. With RDP, as long as my mouse has focus on the work monitor, I can Alt+Tab at will and never interfere with what I have on the other monitor. This is important to me.

Unfortunately, work is discontinuing VPN. I will have to use a web-based storefront going forward. This means that there won't be any delineation between work and personal as I'm switching between programs, and worse is that they'll likely all be Chrome icons at the bottom of the screen making it difficult to tell which one to choose from with the mouse.

    My options:
    • stick with two monitors and one PC. I've wanted to upgrade the size of them, I'll do that at some point and deal with the hassle and my productivity will decrease (I know it will because it does when I remote in with just my laptop).
    • Two monitors and two computers. Use the laptop as the work computer. I have Logitech KBMs that I can switch, but it isn't seamless. I'd also be running another computer or laptop and increasing my energy use and further cluttering my desk.
    • Go widescreen in two monitors or one ultra wide. Fairly significant cost involved for two 32" 21:9 monitors, doesn't really give me much screen real estate to have more windows open and usable.
    • Go fucking big. 43" HDTV like the Sony X800H (rated best for PC on rtings). Could snap three of the work windows to quadrants and personal would be the other. Wouldn't completely solve the problem, but three programs open with work and usable at once would meet 90% of my needs.
The other thing that factors in slightly is that while I don't PC game a lot (but I do sim truck simulator and eventually Microsoft Flight Sim once the PC gets upgraded), I do console game a good bit. I have the last two gens of each manufacturer hooked up to one of the monitors and several of the classic consoles that came out recently. I do occasionally put that on one screen while I work if it is a slow day, I'm in webinars, or if it is something like a turn-based game. Going with one monitor/TV might eliminate that, but it would massively improve things when that is all I'm doing. One display would also help me declutter some wiring, and possibly use a bit less energy.

Building my first pc. Ordered a majority of the stuff through Amazon, but the case I wanted wasn't going to arrive until wednesday. I swapped that and the ram over to Newegg and paid an extra $25 for friday delivery. The case showed up, but the ram is not going to be here until Monday. Everything else is arriving today to be assembled and just sit. How depressing.

Been there done that. Ordered half from Amazon and half from Newegg, sitting with half a computer build is terrible.
