    Do laptops last as long as a desktop given the high temps they reach?

    I'd wait a year for Ryzen 6000 and AM5. The 500 series boards and AM4 will be done within 6-9 months. May as well wait for the new chips and socket.

    Yes.

    Also projects like Framework will allow for simple home repair should a laptop chip or motherboard overheat.

    I'd suggest checking prebuilt and system builder sites until something you want is available at your price. The system builders have better card supply and if you don't need to build it yourself or worry about it long term, just use them.

    I run the B450 Tomahawk. Great MOBO, I haven't had any issues out of mine. Would definitely recommend.

    Man I had to stop watching Gamers Nexus. I respect the guy for trying to expose the dirty/scammy side of the industry but he gets his rocks off on drama and negativity. The way he smiles from ear to ear in a video where the entire review is negative just kind of irks me. Not to mention he'll make a 30 minute long video reading specs and data about a product I just want to see a couple of benchmarks for and call it a day. Maybe I'm now a lowest common denominator, but I enjoy Linus and Jay's content more than Steve's.

    When the 8th gen came out, I was almost tempted to build a system with the 8086K. I didn't do it because half of my motivation was more nostalgia than i needed the faster system.

    The Alder Lake videos I've watched didn't really hype up the new chip that much. They simply showed off the press kit, explained what should be exciting with the new specs, but said to ignore Intel's comparison benchmarks since they were done on Win11 before the scheduler was updated for Ryzen chips. We'll have to wait a week to see how they actually perform.

    Steve is his own weirdness. As you said he plays a good role in exposing the scummy side of this industry but he definitely says things off the cuff that don't come off well. It's why he won't ever be as big as Linus even though he's arguably more knowledgeable. I agree that I'd rather watch LTT, and a big part of LTT now is that it's not always Linus talking either. I don't necessarily like how Linus monetizes everything and works with companies like Honey that mine data from the unsuspecting, but he's just doing business and freely admits that's what he does. His takes are real though and that transparency buys him more cred than Steve or Jay for me. Jay I can manage in small doses but he also has a massive ego.
    My point about hype was more that the reviewers only did those videos because Intel forced them too. I would of liked someone to of done a video saying, "no, we won't do a spec review video for Intel but we will link you all the charts so you can see yourself because we weren't paid to advertise this product."

    Honestly what did GN say that wasn't in the coles notes version Intel dropped later that day? It was pretty much point for point the same. I won't look at Steve again the same after he did that and I hope, even though he's blocking people who say it, he realizes how hard he sold out doing that rather than waiting for reviews.

    As for Alderlake the best part of the slides that have been shown is the comparison to Rocketlake. Remember when Intel said Rocketlake was better than Zen 3? Well their new slides don't show that lol.

    I actually haven't owned a laptop in over 10 years but in a commercial environment you see the longevity difference in duty cycle. If they're treating the laptop like a desktop, powered on 24/7, multiple users, etc. Lifespan is shortened, whereas a single user laptop that gets used M-F and shut down or restarted regularly can easily last 4-6 years.

    I also want to say something about my personal stake in this. I have preordered the i7 12700K with a ROG MB, 32 GB of Corsair DDR5, and all the fixings including a 6900XT.

    I've ran AMD processors and nVidia GPUs for a long time. I spend a lot of time on my computer so I've decided to try the dark side of both the CPU and GPU market.

    To be clear I've spent zero dollars. My pre-order is with Memory Express and, for returning customers, they require no deposit.

    I have a laptop coming with a Ryzen 5850U, my first AMD chip since my Phenom II X4. It was between that and the 1165G7. The downside of not choosing Intel is the AMD version of the laptop doesn't have TB4/USB4, but i think i can live with USB 3.1 for now. The 5850U beats the 1165G7 in all but a few single core tests, assuming the Intel chip's PL1/PL2 isn't capped like in a lot of laptops.

    I'm typing from an 1165g7 laptop right now lol. It's a framework though so no AMD option. I am looking forward to seeing what Alderlake mobile brings though and hopefully Framework will drop boards for this laptop as promised for upgrading should I feel the want to do it.

    I like Gamers nexus for case reviews. Although for some reason, the Enthoo Pro 2 was a chart topper for thermals last year but Steve glossed over it and doesn’t even include it in the benchmarks.

    I didn't even go with the graphics card option with this (my first) build....good 'ole Ryzen 5600G APU for this guy (until prices come back down to earth in 6-12 months hopefully). (ASUS B550M Plus mobo)

    She runs. What more can I ask for?
    I always forget about this thread because the filter at work blocks it for "games" lol

    I'm considering putting that 2700X to use and upgrading my NAS.
    I'm pretty sure this motherboard will boot headless, I'll have to doublecheck.. and I'm pretty sure it'll be a decent performance gain despite losing hardware acceleration..
    i5-3570K -> 2700X
    Z77A-GD55 -> B450M Pro VDH MAX
    16GB DDR3 (1600 CL9) -> 16GB DDR4 (3200 CL16)

    Probably going to add a couple smaller drives as placeholders to set up RAIDZ1..

    As far as the headless goes, I think MSI updated their BIOS to allow it, just have to go and borrow a GPU from one of the desktops to do initial configuration.. Or buy a cheapo GPU from craigslist to throw in there.

    I just rebuilt my PC this year. New case, CPU, and a 2070. I'm behind the leading edge, but I can play all the games I want without shuttering anything so far.

    For my very first build, I had a Number Nine S3 Trio card. Might have been for my 486. My first accelerated card was a Matrox Millennium. I think it was technically only 2D accelerated. I remember needing patches to play Quake with it.

    A lot of AAA games will play just fine on high at 1080P with anything back to a 1070. The higher end stuff is for pushing frame rates with higher resolutions or with high refresh rate displays. One pet peeve of mine is watching people spend $500 on a 165 Hz or faster panel and then drive it at 60 fps in a game like Apex lol.
