Right on, I’m in the habit of always adding a bit more for future proofing to make stuff last longer.

No joke on the lights, have to search for the versions without LEDs.

Ah so you're waiting for an RTX 4090 TI as well as Intel phasing out their LGA1700 socket with whatever 15th Gen brings?

    That'll be a monster for sure :D

Switched it out to an NZXT H7. Runs cool now. Gamers Nexus recommended it.

SSD in my daughter's laptop died. It's a Samsung 850 Pro. I didn't think it was that old. I guess unlike HDDs, SSDs just quit without warning. I would think it would go into RO mode instead of completely calling it quits. It doesn't even resister as a device on the system. I'm trying this at the moment with little hope: https://dfarq.homeip.net/fix-dead-ssd/

I had an 840 Evo lying around and I guess at some point I put a fresh copy of Windows 10 dev edition on it, so at least I didn't have to sit through a Windows install.

Was it the 850’s or 950’s that Samsung recalled (or is doing some type of action) because of early failures? It might be worth looking into.

    Where'd you buy it from?

You might have an email receipt (or online account with receipt access).

I don't remember. The only Samsung drive I remember buying is the 840 Evo. The laptop is a Thinkpad, which usually doesn't come with the typical consumer brands. I think that laptop originally came with a HDD. No idea when/where I picked up the 850 Pro.

Lame, well fortunately SSDs are super affordable!

You're right, think I pulled out a Hitachi HDD from one of my Thinkpads.

My Crucial 1tb was just $50.

SSDs, or at least the Samsung SSDs, seem to be going up in price. The 850 Pro 256GB is about $130 on Amazon. I picked up a 2TB WD SN850X NVMe for $120 not long ago.

I had my eye on a Samsung 8TB SSD. I was going to buy a couple then the price started going up.

    Yeah.
I blame ChatGPT. The hype around GenAI and large language models is insane -- and unwarranted. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but it's not really that good at most things. People are using it as a crutch because they don't know what they are doing, relying on a crappy bot in a nice suit that bases its answers on information it gets from Reddit and the TW forum experts.

I use Samsung SSD in all my own, and client builds.
120 ~ 250gb for the system volume only.

I've had a single 840 brick on me, same as described above.
I also skip the cost-reduced QVO models, and the proprietary vendor-only Samsung models that won't run under Magician.

For Windows machines, I employ a pair of CMR type hard disks as RAID1.
The system TEMP and swap files are redirected to these, to reduce the chatty wear-and-tear writes Windows makes to the SSD.

I keep a System Image copy on the RAID1 pair, and an external USB disk.
The RAID1 pair is also the data volume, and holds daily automated backups.

Hiren's Boot CD is a useful tool if you have to boot WinPE to fix a broken Win10 installation.

I only plan on using the QVO SSDs for storage on my home server. I don't expect them to have great performance. They should still be faster than the HDDs I have now. I don't want to worry about paying twice as much for a replacement if one fails.

The only other SSD to give me an issue is my crucial M4. It had a firmware bug where after 1500 power-on hours, it would drop off the system after 30 minutes. Crucial was quick to provide a fix. The SSD is still alive and well as the OS drive in my home server.

So far I've only had samsung SSD (2.5 and m.2) failures, its all luck I find. I used to raid 0 seagates into death so it didnt bother me, but now I want reliability.

For some reason I have really good luck with Adata drives. I have a really old one in my work laptop and it gets bumped around and twisted with crazy varying temps.

So I'm running Adata in my home pc as well.

For HDDs, I've always preferred Western Digital. I've had dozens of their drives, and only had a few fail, one possibly being my fault. Seagate was never reliable for me. Maxtor was hit or miss. I've had a few Japanese brands like Hitachi and Fujitsu do ok back in the sub 100GB days.

For SSDs, I haven't consistently stuck to a brand yet, though the last several purchases have been SanDisk or WD, which is the same company now. They seem to have a few portable SSD models experiencing bad firmware bugs at the moment though.

For USB, I usually stick to SanDisk or PNY. I've had a couple first gen SanDisk UltraFits die. I suspect they baked themselves because they get hot :bananadead:

My first dead SSD was OCZ :bananadead: They were famously bad.

Us pioneers suffered so others could prosper! I recall there being so few choices and this one had a rebate.
