I built mine more for compiling, compression, and encoding. That's why I have a decent CPU and a weak GPU lol

Same, they had the 5th generation i7 out at the time, but they had removed the hardware for video encoding/decoding. I went with the 4th gen that had the SSE or whatever for video encoding. This thing screams compared to previous builds.

Holy crap. Thats a hell of a build. How fast are those m.2 drives in a stripe? My single 960 evo m.2 is stupid fast, I can just imagine how fast two are.

No kidding, that thing is a BEAST. How does "striping" even work with SSD? Seems a bit like overkill, lol.

the read and writes almost doubled I think its like 4000mbps read and 3000mbps write. my boot time is like 3-4 seconds from the moment I hit my power button lol. also a brand new rig though. it might slow down but I don't think so. first time using m.2 ssds also.

think of having one lane with traffic going both ways (single ssd) or two lanes with traffic going both ways (raid 0) the performance is crazy but its also risky cause if one drive fails both drives crash and burn with my data.

My last build had a 250GB 850EVO SATAIII SSD as boot, and I thought that was amazing compared to platters. The m.2 surpassed my expectations when I installed it.

Just get a copy of Acronis or something and have it do incremental backups to a USB hdd in the middle of the night.

I went from a single hdd with my os and all my programs (old rig) to m.2s in raid0 dedicated to my os. I fell of my chair the first time it booted up the difference blew me away

Linux is my OS. At one time, I had it setup to run entirely from RAM. Talk about fast. Everything was instant.

I can't even remember my last store bought unit (aside from laptops) as I've been building my own systems for years. I got out of gaming ~10 years ago and that was about the last time I built a system. My last build is running just fine, but did have to replace the p/s and 1 HD. It's nice to know there are other PC builders lurking out there. Nice pics and builds BTW!

Last game I played on PC was Doom 3.

I also have built every computer except my first. It was an old IBM 286 @ 12mhz.

That’s a hell of a build. If you’re having heat issues you mean need to delid that processor. Intel may as well be using peanut butter as a thermal solution to the lid which is a shame.

It's been I while since I've really kept up, but I world have thought Intel would have solved the thermal issues by now. Didn't the issue start with 3rd gen Core chips? My 4790k is supposedly a 3770k with better thermal capabilities.

trust me everyone wonders why the top cpu manufacture cant come up with a better solution. the skylakes run even hotter than the coffeelakes. you can solder them and drop like 20c but its a trick and a half ive heard.

I have thought about running a RAM disk (I have 32GB) and loading the OS into it. From what I have seen you can do it for free, but when you reboot it disappears and you have to do it again. There are pay versions that keep it for you so it will stay. But the m.2 drives are so fast I didn't see a need to buy more software to do it at this time.
I think the last pc game I actively played was Doom 1
I played original Doom, Warcraft 1, 2, and 3, and Diablo 1 back in the day.

It’s the same reason it took Intel almost a decade to release mainstream hexacore processors. Intel openly admits that they are a cost control style company. They are not in the business of giving you more for your money unless they have to. AMDs thermal solution is perfect, I run a Threadripper with its massive TDP with no temperatures above 60 c in Prime95 at 4.2 gHz on a 240 mm radiator AIO. Intels solution is perfect for stock clocks, they don’t want to provide a better solution because it could eat into their i9 margins. OC’d a 8700k can beat most of the i9 designs for overall speed, which isn’t good for Intels business model. AMD doesn’t care about that, they don’t segment their market by limiting things artificially with poor thermal solutions and cut down feature sets between lines. I hope AMDs Ryzen 2 can go blow for blow with the 8700k. If it can maybe Intel will finally give Intel buyers the products they deserve including using something more effective to transfer heat to the lid.

My Linux install at the time was about 5~6gb, and copied from the SSD to RAM pretty quickly. A similar Windows install is probably double that. If I remember correctly, with Windows, you could only put some of the OS into RAM.

You can create a ram drive with a few different apps now and move windows to it. The only issue is that you need a master boot partition to start windows and it’s not possible without some software trickery to create a MBP on the ram to boot up the OS from the ram.
