Makes sense. I remember mining with my 7970, my rig was pulling 500w+ and used to heat up my entire room if I left it on overnight, that was only ONE card. Cant imagine the kind of ventilation needed in those massive chinese mining facilities

The big gains have been because AMD is suddenly competitive again which has dropped Intel pricing. Also the biggest price drop is in the HEDT market. The Threadripper from AMD basically forced Intel to cut the price down of their best processors geared for heavy loads in half. I run a Threadripper. It's extreme fast in multi-threaded tasks, like 4-8x faster than my Skylake i5 was.

The funny thing is China is cracking down on mining. Basically going after factories that waste power on nothing, which is what crypto really is. The new mining is going on in places like Germany where you can own your own Solar farm with a huge subsidy.

Here's a few that I built over the years. I don't PC game so these were mainly for HTPC configuration.

I tried out this fanless chassis with heatpipes and it worked fine for about 1.5 years until it overheated and melted the motherboard.

    003.jpg

I rebuilt it using most of the original parts in a new case and a few other parts I had lying around. I still use this one today as my main HTPC connected to my home theater system

    005.jpg

I needed storage space for all my movies and TV shows so I built this server. It runs a Linux based OS called unRAID and has been in service 24/7 since 2011. I have been slowly adding drives over the years as my collection grows and in it's current configuration I'm using about 35TB's out of 44 available.

    010.jpg

I got bored one day and decided to build a watercooled HTPC just for something to do and came up with this monstrosity which I called "Aquastein"
    006.jpg
    007.jpg

I built this one for my teen aged son after he asked me if he could upgrade the processor in his laptop. It's just a basic i5 with a GTX 970 and 3 years later he says it's still crushing games. I'm sure at some point it will need to be upgraded but he's still playing on a 1080p TV so for now it's all good.

If anybody is interested in that fanless chassis send me a PM. I would let it go cheap.

^^ yep the asics are purpose built. I work with a guy who is one of those who has been mining for a long time. He has made a lot of money off it. He mines other crap, then converts it into bitcoin when the exchange rates are good. That limit two bs is only good for websites. He will buy two off newegg, two off Amazon, two off bhphoto, etc... He also buys asics, but those are hard to come by he said and usually have a waiting list of several months as they are built in batches.

Every time I see him, I tell him he is the reason GPUs are so damn expensive.

    Yeah fuck bitcoin/cryptocurrency!

Nice builds over the years! I've personally only had a few (handful) builds myself but have helped others.

At this point it’s time to wait for the 2000-series and try to pre order one of them when they are announced.

Is it going to be 2000 series? I was guessing 1100 series. I picked up a 3GB 1060 early in January for 200. They are now listed at 500. Shits getting more ridiculous each day.
