Intel is out IMO unless you're a die hard overclocker or if you want to hit the top 1% in gaming performance. Beyond that Intel's offerings, INCLUDING their upcoming lineup offers TERRIBLE price-to-performance and even worse thermal performance.

MY TAKE: If you're building with the intent to last ~5 years, get the 3700x. It has 8 physical cores with 16 threads as opposed to the 3600's 6 physical cores. That's important because BOTH new consoles PS5/XBOX will have 8 core CPU's. The 3600 IS a beast, but the 3700x is just hands down going to have more longevity.

On AMD builds, don't skimp on fast memory. Ryzen's infinity fabric eats memory speed for breakfast. 3200MHz is excellent, and Ballistix Sport can be overclocked to 3600MHz very easily to match infinity fabric speed. (Others can too, but I don't have as much experience.)

IMO a 3700x, B450 Tomahawk, and 16GB of 3200MHz RAM is at such a great value right now for what you get. $500 and you can do everything you need for a long time.

AMD CRUSHED the core count game, so I think the next big thing we'll see is improvements in individual core speed.

For graphics cards 5700XT is the value leader, but I've always bee weary of AMD drivers so I stay clear. GTX2060/Super is running the game for 1080p/60Hz, but you'll want to look at a GTX2070Super+ if you're looking for 120hz+ or 4k gaming.

I don't know enough about the upcoming Ryzen 4000 series to really comment.

Ripping edge speed isn't a concern even for a future proof build for me. My current Desktop is a Phenom II X4 810 that I built in 2009 and upgraded to a phenom ii 945 when I build my mom a computer in 2010. It's still 100% useable for my light gaming and uses.

"In addition to the Ryzen 4000 desktop processors, AMD would also be introducing their 600 series chipset. The flagship of them would be the AMD X670 chipset which will be replacing the X570 PCH. According to the source, AMD's X670 PCH would retain the AM4 socket and feature enhanced PCIe Gen 4.0 support and increased I/O in the form of more M.2, SATA, and USB 3.2 ports"https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-4000-zen-3-cpus-and-x670-platform-q4-2020-launch-rumor/

I don't know if I should take this to mean that the 4k cpus will require x670 or not. If Ryzen 4k won't work on x570 I'll just go ahead with b450. Still wondering if previous next gen AMD releases dropped the prices of last gen cpus decent enough to wait to purchase.

AM4 socket has been in use since Ryzen 1000. Based on that article, if the X670 has an AM4, then the 4000 series will use the same socket as the previous Ryzen gens and would not require a x670.

If you're not concerned about bleeding edge, the 3600 is absolutely your best bang for your buck. Most people will never need the advantages offered by an x570 board, so stick with a B450 and go with MSI. Either the B450 Tomahawk or Pro Carbon. They have the best VRM cooling and performance at a very good price.

Every Ryzen release has drastically dropped prices of the previous Gen. Chances are when 4000 series drops, 3000 series will begin to see fairly hefty discounts.

When I asked if it'd be good for 5 years, I wasn't expecting a definite answer but with having mentioned my prolong use of a Wolfdale, and now my Skylake you can get the idea that I've picked some CPU's that have lasted quite some time. Also had a Haswell but I ended up giving that PC away.

I guess the better question to ask is, what's a great bang for the buck that won't be replaced immediately like Intel does with their own chipset, as I mentioned above as well.

I've been out of the loop for awhile but know enough that AMD is the way to go.

I saw that, and though it looks convenient...I don't know.

    Thanks for the suggestion though!

I know you were answering someone else but I can take this advice and learn from it as well.

    Thanks

I may just wait on the 3600 then. Right now a b450+3600+ 32g 3200 will run about $400

I meant it to help you too! AMD uses the same chipset for multiple releases BUT the 4000 series will be the last chipset using the AM4 socket. So if you were to buy now you would have 2 upgrade paths:

    a) buy something like a 3700x(8c/16t) then upgrade later down the line to something like a 3950x (16c/32t) when they drop in price in the future
    b) buy 3000 series now and upgrade to a higher-tier 4000 series in the future.

I understand the longevity game I upgraded from an Intel 3570k (2012 era) just last year. I'm all about getting the mileage out of hardware.

There will always be a better deal around the corner. Buy when you're ready!

Nothing much. It was more a joke than anything else. If anything their business model bugs me a bit, they receive a good chunk of change to only support team Blue and Green, but that's just being a smart business when you're a smaller player like they are.

Great points. The 3600 is the bang for buck 1080P/2K processor right now but the 3700X will likely perform better several years out. Especially since games are being written to move more tasks from the world thread to secondary threads.

TR doesn't support dull socket .

    Then again Epyc does...

Man, so I'm looking at B450 boards and it seems the Tomahawk and Carbon you guys mentioned are praised throughout.

    Problem? ATX...I like M-ATX builds...

Back in the single core days, I wanted to do a server build. But even back then, couldn't have the best of both worlds between server and desktop CPUs.

Now dual socket boards like Epyc have so many threads the memory becomes the issue. Even eight or more channels can't seem to handle 128 threads without some latency. Supposedly DDR5 is being pushed into production for Epyc.

Got a Newegg Blitz deal on the 3600 yesterday and also picked up a WD Black NVME. Now to wait for MB and Ram to go on sale.

That article was posted on May 24, 2016...

That drive was the first Toshiba brand OCZ product from what I can see. They tried to revive OCZ, which used to be a big name in prosumer computer memory and often named products after motorcycles and cars, but from what I've heard sales weren't great and they've re-retired the name.

Meh I liked the post. OCZ holds a place in most system builders hearts. If you were into PCs in the 90s and 2000s, odds are you wanted to buy OCZ memory and probably did if you had the coin. They were the first company, IIRC, to throw big blingy heat spreaders on DDR memory which was the start of the custom RGB ram we see today.
