We'll be traveling to Gatlinburg from Texas this summer. I was wondering if there's any scenic public trails we could hit up for an hour or 2 near Gatlinburg. Thanks!

Thanks! It appears Rich Mountain has better elevation views & Parsons is more creek views. Is this correct?
I might add, I have a lifted Taco Off Road so I'm up to the task of a little more difficult trails if they offer better sight-seeing.
    Thanks!

Nothing difficult around there that is legal. Sorry. Definitely pretty drives though.

TRD Off Road sticker. Not the whole package, just the sticker.
Just went back in November. Never found any off road trails. They frown on wheeling in the park.
Windrock isn't to far from there if you want difficult. Haven't been there but some of the other guys around here have and love it. Check the tn thread. Trips there happen every now and then and I'm sure some of them would be willing to join you.
As for Parsons Branch Rd, a ranger told me it had been closed since the fire. Apperently it was damaged pretty bad. He didn't expected to open any time soon. Rich Mountain is a great ride. It will give you a beautiful view of the whole valley and gets you away from the crowd of cars We even saw a couple bears on it. But it's pretty early into the cades cove loop, so you'll miss a lot of the good stuff if you turn onto it.
I did find a really nice gravel back road leading out of Cosby, TN towards the Cataloochee Valley. As your headed out of Gatlinburg towards Pigeon Forge, you wanna take a right at the "Y" after the aquarium. I'm not to good at directions so here are few gps cords. Follow these in order for a beautiful ride in the country away from the crowd of tourist.

35.6710448, -83.0832086 (good spot with a nice view where we took some pics. You should be able to find our names on the rock, David and Jennifer. Don't tell the rangers.)

35.6339935, -83.0840830 (here you can turn left instead of a right turn and possibly see some elk. They are usally there and an awsome sight to see if you have never witnessed one before. It dead ends at a hiking trail and you can just make a u turn there and continue on.)
35.6396343, -83.0611404 (Another good view of the whole valley)
35.6368631, -83.0543591 (from here you should able to follow the road to I40 and from the interstate, back toward Gatlinburg or towards Maggie Valley and eventually Cherkoee, NC which is also worth visiting.)
Depending on stops, it should take a lil over half a day, so take a lunch. I highly recommend this drive.
IAlso Clingmansis was closed down for repairs from the fires. We drove all the way up there before finding out.
