Getting the off raid is nice because of the resale value of it. Nearly identical trucks compared to the sport, except no locker or crawl control. I personally went with the sr package. I wanna choose my own mods and make it my own. Wish I had a locking diff though, but no worries. Plus I don't my truck to tell me what my smart phone already does lol

    i got a 4x4 dclb sport.
i do wish i got the off road but in canada they never offered it in the double cab. so i stuck with the sport. i do like the colour matched trim and bumpers. i will never go off road but would have liked the diff lock for the canadian winters.

i do fully regret getting an auto. i should have got the 6mt. i do like the sport and it suits my needs well.

i also wish i could have got the quicksand or cement.

we always second guess our decision and choices tho.

Regular cab, long bed, 4 cylinder 2.7L 5 speed manual transmission, 4wd, SR5. No regrets. If I won $1,000,000 tomorrow I wouldn't replace it.

And I got the color I wanted, white. What could be more important than having the color you want?

on my previous tacoma I was like hey, I like those trucks I am going to get one! Bought a 2013 sr5 and from that day on regretted not buying a TRD sport, I am about looks and chrome parts was not my thing. Don't need some of the goodies that the offroad gets, but the sport was right up my alley.

So I bought a 2016 and love it

You would not use 4wd in the rain. Have a good set of all seasons for summer. Get a set of real snow tires for winter. Snow tires are more important than 4wd in the winter. If you can't get going in 2wd with snow tires....you may not want to go anyway. 4wd is nice to have on top of tires tho.

I would say there are circumstances that don't count in that case. I had an Infiniti G37 with a 6 speed. Everything was great until the old lady decided to get frisky while I was driving. I kept elbowing her in the head every time I had to shift gears.

What did you drive before? This is only the second automatic vehicle i've owned (the previous being a BMW 330ci) and I see no issues with the transmission. I guess I don't stop and accelerate a lot. I either drive at 5, 35, or 75 pretty consistently. I don't feel like the transmission is constantly shifting that frequently.

i lived in Seattle on a hill with an unpaved driveway. i had just one car, a 1970 GM A body with 550hp and 600ftlbs and a posi... it was never an issue. i moved from there to Colorado and lived at 8000' for the next 2 years and it wasn't a problem there either. it's all about being smart and having some kind of LSD. but honestly i would prefer the posi for RWD over the yota auto lsd, because it's not as usable and flexible for daily driving.

What happened to it? I was lucky to have met the designer (Last Gen) here before retirement. Gave me the full scoop of how the name came about.

You will be perfectly fine. I think a lot of guys just default to 4x4 for 'peace of mind' but in actuality don't really need it. I can count on one hand the number of times in my life where 4x4 would have been useful and only 2 of those didn't involve trying to drive to get pizza when the city shut down due to snow lol.

Now that being said, there are some that legit need 4x4 up north and I don't want to discredit those guys. I just think there are quite a few that don't really need it but convince themselves they do.

Get some good tires and some weight in the back and you should be fine in the snow. You also won't need it in the rain as that's not really what 4x4 is useful for.

Love my OR access cab. Just pissed that I can't get the MT unless I live in Canada. They're made on the same assembly line, how hard is it to drop a few off in the States?!?

I don't believe you would typically (or ever) drive 4x4 in the rain. And unless you plan on scaling a mountain or going off into the forest in the snow, 4x4 is just another luxury and not a necessity.

I tried to convince myself to spend the extra bucks to get a 4x4, but I live in a city desert and the nearest offroading area doesnt even stress a truck enough to do 4x4. But this is just my situation of course.

I went with a white access cab trd sport. Ive only had it for 3 weeks but i think i made the right choice. I thought about the off road for the locker and crawl control but realistically my truck will never see a situation where it needs that. Plus i couldn't get over the textured flares and chrome rear bumper...and i have to admit i really like the hood scoop :D

    Amen brother.

Tires are king though, for real. This is why you won't hear me hating on someone buying KbrO2's... while they may be overkill for mall crawling, you should never regret dropping coin on good tires IMHO.

I learned my lesson early on in life, with my trusty VW GTI and snow tires. Getting un-stuck out of some pretty gnarly situations with a little bit of rocking here and there with an FWD open diff takes some finesse, but if the tires can't get any purchase, you're not going anywhere no matter how many wheels are turning.

Best story was when I was freeing the GTI from my friend's house's driveway that had been plowed in, his aunt came out and she doesn't speak a lick of English, and I don't know the Spanish for "please move away from the front, I don't want to hose you down with slush!":crapstorm::rofl:

Anyways back on topic. I got the simplest Taco you can, 4x2 Access Cab w/ utility package and I have loved it, no regrets. Sometimes I gaze lustfully at the Sport/OR leather steering wheel and black interior, but I certainly don't mind the grey in mine.:)

Got an Access Cab TRD Off-road as I needed a truck, liked the off-road capability and didn't require full size back seats.
A few months later, the wife is expecting.
    Doh!
    Time for a double cab.
