Any regular cab owners wish they had a 4.0?

    Hey folks.
Just curious if any regular cab owners wished they could have gotten their truck with a 4.0. IMHO THE 2.7 with a 5 speed is a good match for the regular cabs size and weight. I love the 2.7 for many different reasons, from fuel efficiency, cost of ownership, ease of maintenance, but I can't help but thinking a 4.0 would be the bomb. Any RC owners feel the same? And have any RC owners done the swap?

No. I am satisfied with my 4WD 4 cylinder and 4 speed automatic.

I am curious about how the 2016 4WD 4 cylinder with 6 speed automatic compares. Since they no longer make a regular cab, the 2016 is going to weigh 300 more pounds.

The taller 6st gear would not benefit me in this part of Ohio, due to the hills. It might help in a flatter area, however.

I thought the same thing that the newer ones are that much heavier which would make it work that much more

I rode with a friend who had a 16 4 cylinder extended cab prerunner 6 speed auto.....it was constantly shifting trying to keep up and it was noticeably noiser than my 2000 2.7 tacoma

The 2016 has 4.30 rear gears vs the 4.10 on the 2nd gen. That combined with the lower 1st and 2nd gear ratio probably makes up for the weight difference.

While we're wishing, how about a turbo diesel in the reg cabs. That would be the ultimate low end torque and Mpg's.

Did the 4.0 ever get hooked up to the 5 speed or was it only available with the 6 speed when it was mates to a manual transmission?

I think only the 6 speed, but it could not be to hard to make it work. It would be cool to come across a crashed 4.0 probably the best way to do it.

If Toyota would have ever offered a regular cab v-6, I would have bought one on the spot.

Me too. One of my buddies just picked up a late model regular cab tundra 4X4 with the v8. Thing is a beast.

I would LOVE to have a 4.0 /auto in my Reg Cab. I have heavily considered trying to find a wrecked donor truck...maybe one day.

Didn't read you had posted this before I posted lol. But yes while we are dreaming lets just have a Cummins swap mated to an Allison transmission with a narrowed rear end that's got 8 lug super singles mounted to it because honestly that'll be the only way that you'll get traction. EDIT: and a sticker that says "the black smoke doesn't mean it's broke"

2nd gen 5.7 Tundra engine and transmission along with the computer and wiring harness, should be an easy swap into the roomy 2nd gen Tacoma engine bay.

Would it be as easy as finding a wreck and getting the ECU along with the motor and trans? I assume the driveshaft would have to be customized to fit also, but that doesn't sound like it would be that hard to complete.
