Any sport owners regret not getting an offroad?

on one hand I understand the alert of having a TV in a minivan to keep the kids entertained and 8-hour road trips. On the other hand, I grew up in a family of eight with no TVs in the vans and we had plenty of entertainment on 8-hour road trips. And I'm sure my parents gained quite a few gray hairs from it

 

LOL - absolutely understand and agree - family of five here - most of my grey hairs are coming from my oldest in college now (other 2 leave next year) Never could get my wife in a mini van - thought they drive nicely. She's always had the big GMC AWD High Top (Explorer) Conversion Vans - they come standard with big flat screen TVs, lights galore and such. The Yukon's she had were also standard with TVs - we had those so she could pull our small horse trailer (we have a horse farm). We did not take many long road trips - I'm a stay at home guy. During my childhood we didn't have TVs in cars either...or usually seatbelts for that matter.

 

the idrive in my BMW was one of the best infotainment systems i have used. i wish more manufacturers did something similar, touch screens should be illegal on a motor vehicle. with the BMW i could navigate through any functions on the infotainment system without ever taking my eyes off of the road.

 

Not me, I love how this thing handles. With the thick sway bars and stiff shocks you don’t get fatigued driving it for long periods of time. How they got a truck to sit that high and still have no body lean is amazing.

 

What situations do those of you who use your locking diff and CC use them in? Any situations that aren’t off-roading situations where you’re specifically going out to tackle tough terrain?

It feels like a Forester or something. So nice here in WNC through the switchbacks in the mountains and shit.

 

climbing rock ledges even with air down tires sometimes can be made a lot easier with a locker engaged. My current profile picture was on a run where the guys in sports like mine had to give it the beans to get up over those ledges whereas the guys with lockers were able to walk them relatively easily.

 

I do enjoy the features the modern vehicles offer but at the same time long for the simplicity of a radio with 5 push buttons and 2 knobs.

My biggest personal modern vehicle complaint: What was so wrong with a headlight switch on the dash board??

 

Dash board headlight switches smack of the big three, and therefore suck. Imo

Hate em on the dash. Prefer the stalk.

 

As a MT Access cab Sport owner, the only thing I miss is the extra space under the hood for a second battery. The Sport put some brake lines there and I'm not going to relocate them...ugh. Also, would like to break up the solid block of color by having black fender flares, but no biggie.

 

Preference probably depends on age. "In the old days" you could get in any car in the dark, paw around on the left side of the dash and find the headlights. At the pinnacle of dumb Ford even tried putting the horn on the end of the turn signal stalk in the early eighties -- NOT one of their better ideas...

 

Ford did that other commercial trucks at least through 96. we just traded our tanker truck in at work and I love that stupid little horn on a stock. It was completely useless but hilarious at the same time.

 

No Brainer.

The Off Road offers more options for the same price, and a smoother ride. Feel sorry for people who didn't test drive both models before purchasing.

 

And walking ledges vs sending them is better on your equipment while doing less damage to the terrain. Slow as possible fast as necessary.

I did test drive both the Sport and OffRoad and I have to disagree with you on the "smoother ride" part you mentioned of the OffRoad. There's a reason why the factory put 17" rims on the Sport. Call me crazy but the Sport is the superior package when it comes to a smoother ride, in part because of those 17" rims.

 

Yes sir. I plan on putting lockers in when I re gear eventually.

Lol. to be fair he is from Canada. They can have off-road access cabs with the manual transmission there.

This just isn't true and has already been covered. The off road is 16-in wheels, the sport has 17-in wheels, but the total tire diameter is still the same, meaning that the off-road actually has more sidewall and more flex. It also has softer shocks. It does provide a softer ride. That's just an empirical fact.

 

They have the exact same MSRP if configured the same. There is no Access Cab OR MT so that doesn't count.

 

I test drove both sport and offroad (premium package on both) I chose the sport. While the offroad is a bit more cush on the ride, the sport handles better on the highway and roads in my opinion. I had to be realistic and know that I was not going to ever take this thing offroading other than gravel roads to get to a campsite bonus part is that it is also a long bed!

That's been discussed several times already in this thread, both trims have roughly the same size outer diameter tires. The 17" means there is less sidewall which means a harsher ride.
