Once you hit MSgt how do you get into that job? Is the functional manager's primary AFSC the one they manage...or do they just pull them from any career field and place them anywhere like Shirts?

I think you stay in your career field. That way you have a good idea what the career field does and can fit the right people in the right places. I'm pretty sure you need to know the right people to get into the functional position though. Probably good friends with the current FM.

I volunteered for the AFMC Contracting FAM job from 2006-2008. I got tired of seeing the same guys on deployments so I got the job and dug up the deployment dodgers...never regretted a day of it!

Forgot about this thread. Thanks for the bump! Lol.

Found three functionals I could talk to, and got my answers. Sucks I will never see this job on AMS but I suppose there are reasons for that.

Keep your head up, I know that in my careerfield the AFRC functional manager is a MSgt. They do advertise the assignments functional on AMS, but I think that's done when the position can't be filled locally. I'm sorry, but my Air Force career aspirations are not to do the I-410 shuffle.

Yeah fuck the 410 shuffle for sure. I'm happy I've only been TDY down here. I think I would rather be stationed at Minot than here. No, I would rather be. I'm really not a fan if SA.

I'm a 2T0 and I'd rather be at an APS than working in SA. At least they moved the schoolhouse from Lackland to Ft. Lee, VA. That's making instructor duty a little more attractive now to me at least. :D
