I have a 09 Tacoma with the 2.7L four cylinder manual transmission. Anyone have an ideas how to increase horsepower with this engine? Especially in first and second gears?

Turbocharge it. LS swap. Or sell and buy a V6.

It’s a 4cyl truck. Not gonna be a speed demon.

This^^^^. Even if you turbocharge it it’s still a 4 cyl and it’s 14 years old and a lot of $$$ to turbo it. Deal with what you have or get a different truck.

It will be easier to learn how to be patient and just let your engine and trans do their thing.

I've heard the LCE headers can help.
Your options have already been said. Regear, turbo/ supercharge it, engine swap or new truck.
I knew what I was getting into with my 4cyl, it's not speedy by any means. Doesn't mean it's not a great truck.

You have a great truck but if it is not giving you the power you want then trade it for a 6...not many options to get more power.

If your looking for 2.7 info @tooter is the member with all the info. He has the most informative build with Dynos to back it up.

Here's the dynos and search his name for all his input on the 2.7.

He is a 5lug, not sure if you are or not. If your looking for the most bang for the buck and aren't worried about off road, the best upgrade would be to ditch the stock steel rims for some lightweight aluminum rims and a light weight tire with minimal rolling resistance.

I feel your pain. I had a 4 banger Wrangler back in the day and ended up selling it to go to the 4.0HO Wrangler which was night and day different.

I’ve also have a 94 pickup with the 3.0, which took a country mile to run up to 65 mph. Dealt with that for years before 3.4 swapping and adding a SC. Now it really scoots (comparatively), still not a race truck but at least I can pass someone when needed lol.

As others have said, sell it and buy a v6. That’s what I would recommend.

Find a black case TRD Supercharger , this will give you horsepower equal to V6

What kind of affect would Nitrous Oxide have on a 2.7L NA engine? I cant imagine much.

2.7 3RZ 4cyl engines have Hypereutectic Pistons .they're sand casted pistons that will shatter under any boosted or nitrous applications

I dont know much about the 3rz motor...but I do know the 2.7L 2TRFE can handle a supercharger or a turbocharger just fine for a long long time.

you could increase torque by regearing it. lighter wheels/tires. there's headers available and cold air intakes, and tunes. you could also clean the throttle body and intake, change spark plugs/ignition coils and run some fuel system cleaner.
