My thought exactly. The truck has the space. Toyota could have done better in the first place.

Fuel is weight. In this age of weight savings Toyota is not going to give up 60lbs+ to put a 30 gallon tank in.

So why did they increase the size of the tank on the Tundra?

When I had my Tundra, gas guzzler that it was, the OEM 27 gallon tank seemed to be empty all the time, I could pass everything but a gas station. I got a TransferFlow 46 gal tank and that was great......until I had to fill it.

So far I haven't felt that the OEM tank in the Taco is undersized, although wouldn't mind a little more capacity.

Typically people are towing more often with a Tundra than a Tacoma...single digit mileage with a trailer hooked necessitates a bigger tank

My Tacoma has a cargo capacity of only 1200 lbs and has a range on the hwy of about 300-350 miles with the factory tank. I've made 4 cross country trips from GA to UT, AZ, CO, and NM. The truck is close to overloaded with 2-3 people in it plus camping and hunting gear. I can live with stopping every 300 miles before paying $300 for another tank and and reducing my cargo capacity by 150 lbs. About 120 lbs for 20 more gallons of gas plus the weight of a separate tank and related hardware.

A 1/2 ton however has closer to 2000 lbs cargo capacity and already have 26-30 gallon tanks. Going to a 36 gal tank only adds 50-60 pounds of weight. Hardly noticeable when you have much more capacity to start with.

My F-150 has a 36 gal tank. And on that truck is the only way to go. In fact the biggest reason I chose Ford over Tundra was the lack of a bigger tank in the Tundra at the time I was buying. But on my Tacoma adding more fuel capacity has more negatives than positives.

I looked at the Titan 15 gallon auxiliary fuel tank to go in the bed, but decided instead of getting 3-5 gallon eagle fuel cans- https://www.amazon.com/Eagle-U2-51-S-Galvanized-Capacity-Diameter/dp/B000BQO15I

they have flash protectors and are safer than having a large auxiliary tank in an accident - you stand a better chance of having a larger fire should there be an accident and your larger tank ruptures- what are the chances of that? I dunno, once in my lifetime at least- while I was patrolling late on night, I saw a guy in a flatbed without the bed flip after side swiping another car, and his fuel tank ruptured and all the gas poured down out of his ruptured tank onto him through the broken out back window of the cab. He was totally soaked in it. Damn if there wasn’t a fire - he was one lucky guy. So to transport my extra gas more safely when I’m pulling my trailer, I put my 3 eagle cans in a large fuel proof cargo box with a latching lid, and keep it tied down between the wheelwells in back until I need it.

I'm in the same boat needing more fuel storage. I have a FourWheelCamper in the bed of my truck and with a 4" lift, 33" tires, some gear I get around 250 miles to the tank. While I've never run out of gas I've been in some situations that I could have been screwed. I feel like a larger tank is one of the best upgrades I could make.

Sounds like 4.88 gears would serve you better than a bigger gas tank.

Since Toyota like to share parts, maybe the tundra fuel tank will fit?

That's one thing I miss about the F150. The 36 gal tank.

The retrofits could be nice. But they mess with all sorts of things. Nothing major, but for my OCD, it will bug me. DTE, fuel gauge, etc.

If I am headed into the backcountry and need more fuel, I will save myself $400 + labor (plus the above "issues") and buy myself two 5-gal gas cans and strap it to the bed.

No. The hard part would be ensuring the self-made tank plays nicely with the evap solenoids and charcoal canister, else you'd get the CEL on intermittently.
