I don't personally own one but several people I know have them. Seems like a solid product. I like the Honda Civic but, lately Hondas products have moved to the middle of the pack in terms of reliability.

My father has an 06 Corolla S automatic he bought new. Odometer stopped working at 299,999 about 5 years ago, going by oil changes its got about 650k on it nowadays.. original engine and transmission, 15k oil change intervals with mobil 1 extended... Only had the alternator go out once and I've replaced the water pump once... other than that its been the most reliable car we've ever owned. It use to go 140 miles a day 7 days a week, never left him stranded, brother drives it now.

My wife came with an 04 Corolla S that she purchased new. The car has 160k on it now and has been the best car I have ever been around. The only repairs have been the replacement of a caliper that was dragging and the radiator. The engine and transmission will outlast the rest of the car it seems.

Reliable and easy to work on. However, if good handling and AWD are important to your wife, get a Subaru Impreza.

Great quality I had an 02 sold it with 165k no issues at all.
My brother has a 2010 with 120k and my mom bought a 2016 a year ago and zero issues.
good on gas, the 1.8 has actually decent power. my mom went from a sentra with the 2.0 and is a
    different world.

some of this, a little of that
we had a 2004 that was totaled when we were rear ended at a stoplight, guy was doing 45 and never hit the brakes, we walked away fine, you could even open and close the rear doors fine

replaced it with a 2012 corolla S, tinted the windows, added a small sub for some bump and away we went

neither had any issues and have been fun little cars, in fact with the snow tires on they are really fun in the snow too.

Gotta watch with older ones, the 1.8L (1zz-fe) engines are known to use oil and lots of it. I had an 02 Corolla as a DD, and it used a quart every thousand miles. Fortunately I got rear ended and insurance deemed it totaled. I replaced with an 05 Matrix, same engine and transmisssion, and it uses absolutely no oil. You might do some research on the years to avoid if you're looking to go the used route.

    Too few to list.
I have a cousin who has a 2015 Corolla S and I recently got a 2015 Corolla as a loaner when Toyota was working on my xB. For the week that I had it (drove it 1K miles!), I can say that it a great commuter car from point A to point B but that's it. There was a FEW times that I was afraid I was going to get T-boned as the CVT totally sucks. You can floor it and would literally have to wait seconds for that thing to get up to speed. I personally would never buy a car with CVT.

In regards to the Civic, I test drove the new civic with the 1.5L Turbo and CVT and moved much quicker than the Corolla. Civic is also a better buy compared to the Corolla.

There's the Toyota/Scion iM if you are looking for the hatchback body style. Basically the successor to the Matrix. Rear seat legroom is apparently better than a Tacoma double cab. No AWD, however...

I believe this was an issue with 04 and older Corolla's. The same went with older Camry's, xB and TC's with the 2.4L. The issue was Toyota was using small pistons and large rings to compensate. They did a warranty extensions for oil consumption and replaced the pistons, rings, and bearings and at times the whole short block. According to Toyota, 1qt of oil burned in 900 miles was "acceptable". My xB went in for this and according to the service guy, the bill to Toyota was between $2k-$3k for 17.5 hours of labor plus parts.
