My cousin got a 2011 Golf a few months ago, I think it has the 1.4 TSi engine though which isn't offered in the USA, I got to ride in when I was last there and must it had a great ride and really nice interior. I don't know how useful it would be to you as it's a foreign model but he loves it coming from driving an old old BMW 318 and an older Merc. C230.

Yeah I liked the car. I'm pretty sure it had cloth seats but they weren't bad, just a bit hard but thats just probably just because it was still fairly new. Otherwise the fit and finish was really good and it was really smooth and quiet, not much road noise or anything really.

I had my 2010 Golf 2.5, gas, manual, 2 door from May 2010 to September 2011. With my financing I paid just under 24k(CDN). The only problem I had with my Golf was the driver side window seal(got replaced under warranty). It was peppy with 170 HP. I got around 7.5L/100 km's for a 55L tank. Driving through the Rocky Mountains of BC and through the southern interior of BC I loved. The car handled like a dream and the stock sound system wasn't bad. I liked it better than my Tacoma stock system to be honest. The thing that bugged me the most about VW is the electrical issues after sometime down the road. They never really shook the issues of electrical. If I were to buy another VW again I would lease it. I would also get a diesel. The maintenance was cheap and there were lots of mods for it.

I got rid of my Golf because I was tired of having a hatchback. Plus with the drivers around Calgary I almost died a few times, especially when I had to give it up 48 hours so I could get my Tacoma(score!). I've always wanted VW, got one. I always wanted a Toyota and from boards like this and CT4wd made me want one more. Do I regret getting rid of my VW, nah! I loved it as a compact car. It was a time in my life to get out of the 2 door hatchbacks. I would suggest to anyone to get VW but only as a lease, get a diesel(lots of torque).
