I had a 1991 YJ 2.5L 4-cly 5-speed. I'll echo what everyone else has said, terrible for a DD, but the most capable vehicle offroad.

Here's my 2000 TJ with 4L and 5spd manual that I bought new.

As others have said, not good on the highway. Mine has been 100% trouble free.

2020 Willys JLU used as a summer toy - left my SO stranded last week due to a dead battery. Taco to the rescue, although I should probably buy her a jumper pack. Aside from the battery, we have had the A/C repaired twice and noisy steering when cold issue checked over. The dealership was "unable to duplicate" even though it does it every time it cold starts at home... Ready to get rid of it and get an older pre-2004 model since it is not used as a DD.

Here's my 98 TJ going over Devils crack on the Moab Rim trail. Loved my Jeep, but after all the off road suspension modifications it SUCKED driving at anything over 40 mph. My Tacoma can do 80% of what the Jeep did off road and can still drive all day at 80 mph without scaring the crap out of me.

I actually owned one and traded it (down) for a 2017 JKRR. Crazy, huh?

Nice! What kind of lift packages are on both vehicles?

In these images Jeep has a 1” Terrraflex spacers and in the slot canyon one it had Rancho RS9000 shocks. Tacoma is stock.

My husband has 2” lift Rancho springs that he hasn’t installed yet and Tacoma just got Dobinsons twin tubes & 2” springs and Icon AAL (I left the overload in, so 2” lift as well).

I know a couple who both own Wranglers bought new. Never been off pavement, look pristine, and only basic transportation. They complain they are financially unstable.

I am sorta in the same situation as your family. I own a both Tacoma TRDOR and a Jeep Rubicon 2-door. I vastly prefer the Taco for everyday driving, but the Jeep is way "cooler". I'll eventually have to get rid of one. Which vehicle is your favorite with respect to livability, off-roading and just fun?

It’s a hard question - we are a family of multiple project cars each, lol. I own the Tacoma, my husband own the Jeep. I bought Taco with 33k miles, while Wrangler had 114k, so comparing maintenance/ repair would not be fair.

They both are very capable vehicles and have done everything we asked of them. If you want to do lots of hardcore off-reading, I’d say Jeep is a better choice. If you need a bed and better road driving manners - it’s the Tacoma all the way. Me? I’d keep both if that’s an option.

Check out this video if you haven’t already.

Thanks for the video. I agree with it. My 2-dr Rubicon is a beast off-road, but downright scary at 75+ mph. Since I'm more an Overlander, I end up driving the Taco more. Also, I'll take your advice and keep both (for now). BTW, I also own a Subaru Crosstrek for commuting and it handles very light O/R work well. Thanks, again!

To pipe back in, I'm not the anti-jeep. haha.
Our 2nd vehicle is a 2019 Cherokee trailhawk and that handles beautifully. Would take that on the interstate over the yota......it has heated steering wheel and seats, too.

I put 58k of nearly trouble free miles on my 14 jk 2dr MT. I towed my travel trailer several back and forth 550 mile trips. I've gone short bursts (not towing) to 100mph and have never experienced death wobble. All while still seeing around 20mpg on the highway. The ride was stiff and you were constantly making micro adjustments at the helm but some of that was due to e rated 35's and slightly stiffer coils

I’ve put close to 200k between a TJ, JK, and JKU. My most recent was a 2016 JKU that I was finally able to lift and get setup how I wanted it; installed a 2.5” Terraflex lift, some 35’s, adjustable LCAs, driveshafts, 4.56 gears, etc.. but it eventually developed some knocking sound in the driveline that I couldn’t remedy, so I traded it in for the Tacoma I have now.

It drove fine on the highway, especially after I regeared it (though it was not significantly better like I heard), but I had a pretty realistic expectation for the driving experience anyhow. The Tacoma is definitely a better DD, and while I like Jeeps, I think I’m over that.

Between the 3 jeeps, I’ve had hardly any issues that weren’t maintenance. A water pump and radiator in my 99 TJ, maybe a battery in my 2012 JK, and a battery, a steering pump, and the aforementioned issue in the JKU.

I also own a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that we purchased new. It's definitely different compared to my Tacoma

I have a 93 YJ with the straight 6. Its currently doing what Jeeps do best; not run.
