I’ve got a 5 speed manual 97 4.0 TJ we bought from California 12 years ago on eBay for $7111.
I jumpseated out to Orange County airport ,test drove it in a loop in front of the terminal and back to the same spot in about 8 minutes .
I wrote a check to the guy’s girlfriend who met me there.
I jumped seated back to Minneapolis on the same plane I just rode in on a hour earlier!
He cashed the check and sent me the title a few days later!
We flew out there , picked it up at a hotel parking parking lot a month later where again his girlfriend had left it for us earlier in that day with the keys left for us under the hood.
I never did meet the guy we bought it from but they left us with a full tank of gas and it all cleaned up.
We were both trusting of each other ……how things have changed in the last few years …..
It had 78000 miles on it then.
It’s got 90,000 miles on it now and has never been used in the winter here in N Wisconsin.
We love it for hitting the trails with the top off.
There’s a lot of people around this area that want to buy it because it still has no rust and original paint albeit scratched up.
So yes we love it and it saves us from scratching up our new manual transmission Tacoma.

Man, you really just 'like' every vehicle out there.

My comments were specific to the vehicle, completely disregarding the fan base it carries (cause Toyota owners can be douchebags too).

The only thing worth a damn in FCA (now Stellantis) is the infotainment system that came out to replace the older 430 and 730, as that system went from from 2011 to about 2018 or so.

2011 is the time when they started using the Pentastar as well, which was an upgrade from the dogshit 3.8 but still had it's own issues especially the first two years of production involving the heads.

They feel, and have always felt cheap. Tolerances were so loose on so many things, and I guess I understand that part as you're supposed to be able to pull parts off quickly and easily.

But from the weak axle housings, the terrible seats, to the horrible ride...they had no excuse to sell those things for as much as they did. But people bought into them cause 'It's a Jeep thing' :duh:

Pair that up with an unreliable power plant and what do you have?

Even the older Cherokee's (like the XJ you mentioned) left me unimpressed. I remember parking my 3rd Gen 4R next to my salesman's old-person owned XJ (which his was in mint condition) and it felt cheap compared to the 4R of the same year.

I will say, I'd drive a YJ and I'd leave that fucker stock. Those are just cool and I almost bought one when we took one in on trade.

I did own a WJ though but holy shit those things sucked so much gas; made money on it when I sold it as it was old man owned too (single owner).

More hands on-experience with certain vehicles will change that as you'll see just how short-lived the honeymoon is

The little 42 MB I had was a simplistic joy to own, and if I had enough extra money, I'd happily buy another.
But buying another FCA product is out of the question, based on reliability alone.

I still miss sitting on the fuel tank in that little MB, it was SO much fun to drive. Took it to Moab one year and made it through Finns, it was a riot.

I have owned 4. Had two YJ’s. My TJ was a 2004, never had any issues with it at all. Pic below is when I sold it in 2016. I don’t have any pics of the old YJ’s. They were all great. I now have a 2018 Recon JK, and I am building it now into what I want to use it for. Camping, trail rig for the family. I have always liked Jeeps, and still do. From my experience in owning 4 of them, the reliability issues are no worse than most other vehicles on the road today. And I have owned plenty of 4 runners and Tacomas. And I hate to admit it, but Tacoma quality is nothing like it was 20 years ago.

I owned 2 TJ’s one rubicon and one sport.

You are not going the same places as a TJ Rubicon in a Tacoma. They are just too small. You add lockers front and rear. Solid front and rear axles. 4 to 1 crawl ratio. On33” tires you will leave 80% of the other rigs behind…..until you die of heat exhaustion, dislocated disc.

    But, man are they uncomfortable.

I love my tj but like almost everyone has said they’re not the most comfortable ride. 04 and she just rolled 93k. I have a soft spot for Jeeps with the good ol 4.0IMG_2747.jpg

2020 TRDOR (over $55k with mods) and its garage mate is a 1999 TJ SE ($5k with no mods, stock suspension, 2.5L 4 cylinder @134k miles, rust that needs addressing, no power no lockers and no hope according to some). The TJ feels and drives exactly the way you would imagine a government issued 4x4 would drive. (OP referred to it as "raw" and that's accurate) Absolute blast off road, but would NEVER use it as DD or on a road trip. Its basically a cheaper street legal version of a side-by-side. What's not to love?

Never thought my Jeep rode rough. Especially when components are not worn out.

Well, since this popped back up I'll throw a comment in. I had a '74 CJ5 with "one big, beautiful" AMC 360 V8 installed by the first owner along with a manual trans. It was lifted with some nice, almost bald big fat tires. I traded my car for it in '78. I don't think either one of us got a good deal.

I learned how to rebuild the carburetor, redo the ignition components, weld a cracked frame, and how to trace and fix many "owner induced" wiring problems. I also learned how not to drive in the snow or big, fat almost bald tires. I ended up trading it for a '74 Camaro. The jeep was way too much repair and rust.

I’d reckon the pros and cons would depend on why do you want to get rid of the TJ.

Well a pro is that they have more stringent air bags requirements in newer ones. The cons are they are harder and more expensive to work on. Jeeps are jeeps. If they ain’t stock you’ll aways be working on them. I’ve been working on my 04 since 04.

My questions is doesn't everyone? A tacoma trd, a jeep rubicon ( 6-speed stick), and a grenadier
