    Hey guys,

Has anyone bought a base V6 auto 4x4 TRD Sport or Off Road, no packages or options added? I built them out on the Toyota site and they came to $34K, which is right where I'd like to start. However, the only available inventory matches that came up were $36.5K+. I'm wondering if what I want is even available. It's frustrating, because the Toyota website has such a limited mileage search range compared with other manufacturers' sites.

    Thanks for any info!

Where in the country are you? The Toyota "build" page isn't really a build page. It's actually inventory based on the zip code you entered.

As far as finding a "base" version of the truck you want, you have to be willing to travel. Dealers like to tack on all those options in order to get you to pay more.

However, I would highly recommend getting the tow package. It provides you with a more powerful alternator and auxiliary coolers. The coolers will improve reliability of your transmission and engine. I wouldn't buy a new vehicle without it if it were an option.

Perhaps I'm confused (OK, probably), but I didn't think you could get TRD on a base, I thought it had to start as a SR5.

I've just come through a similar search process - looking for a "base" model TRD Sport (but with 6MT and a tow package). I used a 3rd party automotive search website, with no "distance from zip code x" filter to find existing inventory for exactly what I wanted. Told my local dealer where it was, and what the build code was, he used it as a template to reserve a factory build for his dealership to that spec. If i were in a hurry, he probably could have done a dealer swap to have that car shipped to the dealership in a few days.

Good luck finding the one you want!

I think most TRD and tacoma trucks are built with the tow package minimum. I honestly don't think I've seen one without on the dealer lots.

I think the OP is wanting a TRD without the extra packages.... hence Basic truck with only TRD... the cheapest TRD you can get.

From what the dealer told me, and what I've seen, the TRD without a tech package is far more common. However, they load the TRD's up with $2500 in accessories like exhaust tips, step rails, etc. they all have the tow package too.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, "basic" would have been a better term. I'll definitely get the Tow Package if it's worth the money. I'm just trying to keep costs down.

Tow package is worth it with the extra cooler.

You never know if you might need to tow something in a pinch and it also gives you a point to yank the truck out from the back if you get stuck.

Standard TRD package without all the add-ons, that makes sense. Sorry 'bout the confusion. I agree 100%, chrome exhaust tips and all that, wouldn't pay one dime for it and if they have to remove it to make the sale then that's what they'd have to do.

Yes, get the tow package. The larger alternator and coolers are good even if you never actually tow anything.

I bought my truck a few weeks ago, they only had like 4 TRD Sports on the lot, all of them had some sort of extra accessories added, all were tow package, all had some sort of step rails, and all had the premium floor mats carpet or rubber, all had the chrome exhaust tip, I believe all had front tints done too. I was mostly ok with those options(rather not of had the premium carpet mats)

I'm pretty sure if you want 0 accessories and stick to your guns the dealer will be able to locate one from another dealer somewhere and get it for you.

Or just order one like I did, I wanted a longbed TRD with only tow in Quicksand. Dealer already had a grey one in route so all they had to do was request a color change. It was approved and 2 months later I had the truck I wanted.

They're pretty easy to get if you're not picky on the color.

I bought the off-road with tow only. Had to find the right dealer that would order exactly what I wanted without trying to add on extras. Took 3 months to get it once I ordered it.

If I've been reading things correctly, a manual transmission doesn't need the cooler, correct?

How can one tell if the tow package is installed?

It wasn't listed on my specs (4x4 DC Sport w/Sport Upgrade). I've looked at other Tacoma's on a local dealer's lot and none have the tow package option listed but they all (like mine) have the Class 4 tow receiver and from looking underneath, it appears that it is attached to the frame.

The automatic definitely does for the tranny cooler but all of them including the stick also get an aux oil cooler and bumped up alternator. If it's the factory tow option it will also have a 7-pin plug on the bumper.

I definitely recommend getting the TRD OR with tow package, you never know when you may need it and the tranny cooler is good to have. I didn't get any other fancy stuff either, as I have no desire to pay for those extras that I don't need. Mine had to be ordered from the factory to get what I wanted, even the color, they tried to throw on extras like all weather mats and the phone cable junk, but I refused to budge on the price I wanted to pay, so they came down to the price I said I would pay and included those without extra mark up.
