Anyone come from a Tundra to Tacoma recently?

I have a 2014 Tundra. It's a beaut. Love driving it, but the mileage sucks donkey d*ck. I average 14 MPG legit. My computer says 16, but it's lying. Can't mess up simple math. I had a 2009 Taco and a 2011 Taco. Both were great trucks. Traded in the last one for the 2014 on an impulse.

I've been thinking of going back to a Taco, but this time, the 4 banger. I am looking for a truck with better mileage. If not for a Taco, then I will stay full size and go with an ugly ass F150. The thing I don't like about the Tacos nowadays is the price. They all seem to be $32k+... WTH? Even the 4 banger was 32k...! When I bought my last one it had everything but leather seats and 4WD and it was 28.

Has anyone downgraded? How was it? This will be the first time I go from full sized to mid.

I went from my 11 tacoma to my 14 silverado (also impulse buy) then back to my 15 tacoma. It was weird at first but got used to it, so much easier to drive and fits my lifestyle better, I really had no reason to be in a fullsize besides my friends all having them. I do agree and you are right in that midsize trucks cost almost as much as fullsize now. I paid only $3k more for my silverado then the current taco. But Im happy with my choice. I would advise against the 4 banger though, they dont get much better mileage than the 4.0L in 4wd config.

I just think he inadvertently posted in the 3rd gen section like many others do.

Came from a 2009 2wd tundra and recently traded it in for my tacoma which i bought certified. I wanted a 4x4 and just didn't need a full size truck any longer after selling my dirt bikes.
I test drove some new and used 4 bangers but didn't like jumping on the pedal to get it moving as fast as the v6 does.

Totally unrelated why'd you sell the dirtbikes? Im currently on house/bedrest with a ruptured spleen, lacerated kidney and rib fracture after an MX crash. Been debating alot about hanging up the hat of the thing I love most lately.

If you're concerned about mileage you ought to wait for the 3rd gen to release it's fuel economy numbers. The 4 banger in the current gen comes with a 4 speed auto which is why it isn't much better than even the current v6. You can get it with the 5 speed manual which will improve things a bit. But you won't be impressed by the power.

I would expect the new generation v6 to have almost the same or possibly even better fuel economy than the current 2.7L i4. in the new gen the 4 cyl can come with a 6 speed auto which should boost it's fuel economy numbers too. Basically if you want better mileage you should wait until to hear the new numbers, then decide if you want to pull the trigger on a 2015 model. The new model goes on sale in september so epa numbers will be out probably a few weeks before that.

I think you'll continue to be disappointed by the pricing, especially compared to full size. Toyota is going to sell a lot of the new Tacoma so don't expect to see any discounts or rebates offered.

    Went from a 2007 tundra 4x4 5.7 v8 to a 2014 tacoma 4x4 v6.

What I miss about the tundra
-that v8 was an incredible engine with hp/tq
-great towing capabilities....barely knew I was towing until I had 5k+ lbs back there.
    -creature comforts/space
    -full size, deep bed space

    Things I won't miss
-gas mpg's....though not too much worse than current v6
-trying to get it in the garage during hailstorm
-city driving and trying to park the damn thing without @holes dining your doors all the time

All in all...love my taco and will keep for a long time. I'd hang onto your tundra unless this new 2016 tacoma 3.5 engine kicks butt in the hp, torque and mpg departments.

I've never owned a tundra but I have owned a 4 banger Tacoma and my current v6.
My first was a double cab 2 wheel drive. The power sucked and my gas mileage wasn't that good or anything close to what it said it would be on the sticker.

My v6 is also w double cab but this one is a long bed 2 wheel drive.
I drive mainly streets and very little highway and I average 17.
If you get one pay the extra money and get a v6.
Especially if you're going from a Tundra to a Tacoma.

The mileage on the Tacoma isn't amazing but it will be better than that of the Tundra.

I just went the other direction and went from a 2011 access cab 5 lug Tacoma 4x2 to a 2015 Double Cab 4.6L Tundra 4x2. I am happy with my decision. But the 4.6L is quite a bit better on fuel than the 5.7L. I'm averaging 18.5-19.5 mpg now that the engine is broken in. My only complaint is you need ATC to park the dam thing. Honestly I would hold on to your Tundra. It's just not worth giving up the space and comfort just to get a few MPGs.

Not so recent but i bought a brand new Tundra back in 2007 when it all new redesigned.Absolutely loved the truck!Had to sell it in 2010 for financial reasons.Rode motorcycles for a few years when i decided to buy a brand new 2012 Tacoma that year.Love this truck even more and i'm approaching my 3yr anniversary next month. You probably want to keep your Tundra though because your not going to notice a significant increase in MPG's and your going to sacrifice space for what you need it for.

I first bought a 2000 tundra which I still have with 250K miles. I bought a 2008 tundra crewmax limited and put 100K on it and just traded it for 2015 tacoma double cab off road 4x4. I never did like the crewmax cause it was just too damn big. It took up my whole carport and it was hard to drive in tight places and park. I don't miss it at all. I pull a 24' travel trailer with the tacoma and it tows it just fine.

I rode for 30 years and raced desert (District 37) for the last 10 years...it was hard selling the bikes I am 45 now and my body just cannot take the abuse anymore. I may get back into trail riding in a few years when my kids are older. But for now I plan toss an OME lift on my tacoma and start exploring the trails and enjoying quality time with the family.

Get healed up brother and thanks for your service. OP sorry for the thread derail and try to stay away from them Ford's...a buddy of mine is going thru hell with electrical and tranny issues on a 2013 with just 38K on her and now has an expired warranty. I had a 2006 F150 and the tranny blew at 45K...no more Fords for me.

I'm assuming you want better gas mileage because fuel costs add up?

I'm not trying to be an ass, "but" consider this. You bought a 2009, 2011, and 2014 Toyota. The cost to trade a vehicle every two years cost way may than gas prices on a paid off vehicle.

My daily driver is a 2003 Tundra. It gets 13 in the city, but the payment is zero a month. Get my point? Trading in a truck for gas mileage is a band aid.

Just a thought. If your an environmentalist I apologize.

I hear ya about the size. The Tundra is a bitch to park. The economy is a non issue. 14 mpg for the Tundra and 17 mpg for the Tacoma. Not enough to bother me.

I love having both. the Tacoma is great for everything but towing and extra passengers. The Tundra is a towing beast and is great for hauling extra people. I know I'm lucky, but having both is the best of both worlds. In addition, I like the first gen Tacoma better than the 2nd gens. I like the 2nd gen Tundra's over the 1st gen Tundra's.

I also am fortunate to have both and absolutely love each one for different reasons. When Toyota finally built a "real" full size I knew I had to have one so bought my 2007 DC TRD 4x4 in August of 2007 (Had to give Toyota a few months to work out the new model "bugs") and have not had a single issue with it since. Bought the 2015 Taco for the following reasons: Better daily driver, easier to park, fits in my garage, better trail rig due to smaller size). If you had to pick just one it would completely depend on your situation. I have three boys, so when we travel together it is definitely in the Tundra. When I am alone I love the simplicity and functionality of the Taco.

2.7 is only worthwhile if you stay stock. If not, I would get the V6. My 2.7 DCSB PreRunner with auto trans has a mild lift (2") and mild tire upgrade (P265/75/16) and went from 22-24 MPG average and 26-28 MPG highway to hovering in the 19 MPG zone now, all highway or average tank. It doesn't change.

I bought a shell last week for my bed, and I'm at about 150 miles on HALF a tank of gas, the first half. This last half will go quickly. If 200 lbs of shell is knocking me down to 16 or 17 MPG average, then I have to assume that a similarly equipped V6 would be getting about the same MPGs, if not slightly better since it doesn't have to work as hard to move my turtle around the roadway. Mind you, I drive like a geezer and don't see 65 MPH on the highway too often. My mileage sucks.
