Not sure. This is what I'm trying to figure out. I'm sure I could replace it. I'm not sure if you need the truck hooked to a computer to make it run again.

Hey just to let you know this exact thing happened to me while I was headed to Crater Lake for a vacation...truck died about 50 miles from my home and was towed back to the dealership...they were great and got it fixed within two days...I must admit my truck feels as if it runs better than ever and doesn't feel as sluggish? Who knows...

Did they "tow" it on a flat bed (no wheels on your truck rolling) or not? Did the repair otherwise mess up anything on truck? From what I understand they don't need to unbolt engine mounts as they can access CPS by removing a timing chain cover and/or one of the front wheels? I don't know what it takes to access the CPS. Hopefully not much disassembly required?

Yah they towed it on a flat bed...once they figured out what it was it was done pretty quickly (2 days). Not sure what it involved.

I'm still wondering if this is a part that could be replaced in the field? Anyone?

I go lots of places for work and play that breaking down is not an option. No cell service and no tow truck.

I just had the crank shaft issue as well...sputter, sputter, sputter...all warning lights flashed and truck completely stalled. Coincidentally I was traveling at 72mph w/ cruise control on but instead of a semi I almost got hit by a large garbage truck. I was able to get it started and made it to the dealer only for it to die right in front of their service doors blocking others from entering. Dealer had no idea what the problem was. First they thought it was bad gas (I only put the best in the taco 93 sunoco) then they told me they called toyota california to help solve the problem. Still are giving me crap saying that they're trying to recreate the problem by driving it enough so it heats up.

Just dealing with this myself. 21,287km's in on 4dr TRD Sport.

Got stranded while towing my camper. Got towed to Toyota dealer. Immediate thought was bad gas but technician was convinced it was a fuel pump. Two days to authorize to pull a tank off a 2016 Tacoma off the lot as part would be 3-5 days out; Dealer and Toyota Canada jumped through hoops here. Got a new gas tank now and fuel pump. But.. after they test drove it, all was OK so they said. I got 2 km out of town and it broke down. This time, the sensors all went off. Note that no sensors went off the first round of troubles. What else has been going wrong? Why no warning?

Question... if they knew of the problem with the crankshaft sensor then why are they not broadcasting this out to dealers?!? Seems to me that Toyota Canada are not effectively communicating with their franchises as this could have been easily rectified. WTF! Is this Chrysler?

Fortunately, Toyota rented me a GMC Duramax to salvage what was left of my holiday. But then I got the news it would be another week out for the sensor replacement. Simple Cost-Benefit-Analysis here... how to get a truck, camper, large dog, and wife home a 1000km away versus pulling parts from another 2016 Tacoma. OK, they have been good to me so far. But Logistics! The Dealers were great and so were Toyota Canada but the communications on logistics were a nightmare. I had to keep two steps ahead and drive this through Toyota Canada and the dealerships; credit to my dealership for stepping up.

It still comes down to simple issues with communications. Toyota Canada get an "F-" when it comes to updating their franchises on recurring issues.

I pick up my truck on Sunday and hope to make it home safely. I work in the back country. Now I am very concerned. That Duramax diesel put a great big smile on my face and is well worth the extra $'s for the power and proven reliability.

I will be purchasing an In Reach communication device for all travels in this truck from now on as it just can't be relied upon... just yet.

F.CK the Go Pro camera mount. Provide customers with an In Reach and mount for this.

Hopefully when someone gets this repaired we will see a parts replacement part numbers and then we will know how involved the repair is and if it can be done out in the wild.

This happened on my Nissan Sentra and was common for its generation. The original CPS was in a plastic housing and it would die when it got old and up to temperature. I had it happen at 40k. It was replaced with a metal unit that Nissan put out later and never happened again

    Is this a plastic unit?

No clue. Told me it was an updated part and that a potential recall was coming, but not sure how if it would still be 1 week out for delivery. Suspect it came off stock vehicle on lot. Will update discussion as details come available.

My Crank position sensor went out on the 4th of July while on vacation, 8.5k miles on mine. I didn't get a rental at all, and they had to order the part. Thankfully it was a large family vacation, so we had plenty of vehicles there. It's just one of those things that happens, I'm not concerned about it but I do wish the dealership had been more concerned about me being out of town without a replacement vehicle. I've moved on though, hope it doesn't happen again in a worse situation like deep in the woods or something.

So this happened to me 4 days ago. Same story, I was commuting into Boston and my car stalled out on the off ramp. I thought it was a low transmission fluid issues because it was flashing me ATF temp warnings and oil pressure warnings. Took her to the dealership and the service record said they added 3 units of fluid, which was crazy! I thought I was good to go so the next day I packed up my truck for a trip to Maine, and 25 minutes into the drive she stalled out with a full load, my wife and toddler in 90 deg. weather. Their senior tech at the dealership called up toyota and replaced CPS, put 120 miles on her and sent her back my way. She feels OK, but i'm just nervous as hell now. I've got PTSD so every little thing makes me paranoid. Hopefully It'll resolved and i won't have to go back. Fingers crossed. On the upside the dealership gave me great service and was super attentive to my woes.

Damn, more 3rd gens are leaving people stranded or left in less ideal situations. Pretty damn scary!

Mine went out the other day. I was able to limp it to Toyota dealership in New Bern. They fixed in two days. Had to order new sensor(part # 90919-05089). Had codes P03000, P030027, and P030085. Hope this sensor has been improved so this doesn't happen again.

Do you know if this sensor is in fact an updated part? If so I may just pay to have it replaced (depending on cost). I take my truck remote places for work and play that if I had a CSPS go out I would be screwed beyond screwed.

@Jeff Lange please see my post above. Any idea if the replacement CSPS is an updated part or just a direct replacement?

Id like to know as well. With as common as this seems to be getting lately I may even go buy an extra and throw it in my glovebox if its a repair that can be done on the side of the road. If my new truck leaves me stranded on vacation Toyota will have to deal with the most incredibly irate customer they have ever seen in the history of automobiles.
