Does anyone know if the sensor effects shifting at all? After getting the CPS replaced, my transmission now feels like it's hunting for gears or shifting at weird times. Thoughts?

The part number for the sensor hasn't changed. I don't expect there have been any changes to the sensor, but occasionally they will make small revisions without changing the part number.

I own a 2016 TRD Sport M/T DCSB. I just had an issue happen on Sunday. Was pulling into my neighborhood and the truck lost power and stalled. When trying to restart, it would stay started for a coule seconds, rpm's would drop, and engine stalled again. I disconnected the battery for 30 min or so to reset sensors, and truck started again fine. Had it towed to dealership (free roadside assistance), turned out it was the Crankshaft position sensor. They kept truck for two days to do some additional testing, another Tacoma came in at the same time with same problem. They opened a case with Toyota, just got truck back today.

The transmission issue that is rectified with the TSB is okay with me, having a CPS shit the bed while doing 75 on the highway not so good. A little more hesitant about my ordered truck.....

My money says this will be the next TSB. Hopefully mine holds out until that happens.

Not sure what the tSB would be. Updated part? Heat shield?

I am planning to heat shield mine this weekend. It can't hurt. And we do know that once it fails, and then cools down, it is good for a while, so heat is in play to some degree at least.

Why do CPS always go bad on long trips? back in '06, our 2003 miata had a bad CPS 400 miles into a 1200 mile trip. CEL came on each time. Each time it was the same code. 3 dealers over 800 miles with different fixes for the same code, all failed, but they all managed to get me a few hundred miles closer to our destination. 3rd time, it blew out the cat. they fixed the cat, nothing else. on the way home, did the same thing. this time, a dealer got it right, fixed the CPS AND the new CAT it blew out. $200 fix first time around would have saved Mazda thousands in warranty repair: 2 catalytic converters replaced because they got it wrong the first time. Was worried every time I took the car out, but ran it for another 7 years after that. Guess CPS failures are hard to diagnose? 2200 miles on TRDOR. so far, had to grease u joints and fill transmission myself. so, guess CPS is coming next.

When our CPS went bad on our 2003 miata, the transmission would slip going from 2nd to 3rd, because the RPM's would die out. maybe same thing? rpm drop may be messing with an automatic transmission?

I posted this in the thread with the diff problems... but everyone should do it for the CPS issues as well... this is not an issue of rubber seals or sounds from an a-arm... this is a safety concern with very bad results if it happens while driving...

Please, do yourself, and everyone else, a favor and log a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

    https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

It is the only way for these problems to be raised and pushed to be made recalls... everyone that is experiencing these issues should file a claim. Only way to push Toyota to handle this as a recall instead of a TSB...

Wow , This just sucks so bad . My last Tacoma went 19 years and never seen the dealership again after I got it home . I am all excited after 20+ years to get my new retirement Taco and , their turds ?

I live in rural Ok. It will be at least a 100 miles to the dealer , too far for the free tow ? I hope that some boots get planted in some bean counters asses for this non sense ! Heads need to roll with this joke of a release for the new Tacoma that so many have waited on .

We are long time Toyota owners , no issues . This new truck isn't exactly a pearl ,clearly .

I am going to just wait awhile longer before I buy one now and see what else shakes out . Howling rear end = normal my foot ! Big boot in some asses needed at Toyota !
I am very glad some here have gotten their moneys worth as it SHOULD BE ! It should be uncommon to have an issue with a Tacoma ! Not owners waiting for the next problem while riding around with " radio " turned up so not to hear rear end , whistling from front end , wind noise from door seals , and the freaking steering wheel buzzing like a beehive ! What the heck is going on these days ?

Sorry to rant on the OP's post .

    MM

My truck crapped out on me 6 days ago...all 3 warning screens. Let the truck sit 25 minutes after calling Toyota. Got 1/2 way to the dealer and started to die...transmission clunking while the truck shut down and went into limp mode( manual steering no power transmission in auto neutral...barely made it into a parking lot. Waited another 25 minutes, fired right up, no codes, got it to the dealer. On Monday the tech drove the truck 20 minutes came back to the dealership. Went out again, it died and he walked back. It was the Crankshaft Position Sensor. The new part they put on is a different part number...i.e. a revised/updated part. This can go out at anytime and it shuts the truck down. I believe there will be a Safety Recall soon before someone gets killed. My buddy is taking his 16 in and having the revised part put on and will let Toyota reimburse him when they finally replace them. My 2002 had 173k miles with little to no issues. This is a huge safety concern, do not take it lightly.

Anyone know if an updated sensor has been released or is used on the 2017s? I drove one a few days ago and it exhibited very similar symptoms as soon as I pulled off the lot and attempted to merge in traffic. No throttle response, sputtering, hesitation and then it took off. Never actually stalled though.

The truck had 2 miles on it...

Someone posted a pic of the new design on here, it has some grid marks on it or something.
