Anyone else have this engine noise?

Found this video on youtube that displays the engine noise I am experiencing perfectly. Now before everyone tells me about the taco-tick I understand these engines are noisey from the factory. And I, without question, have the taco-tick.

My concern is the knocking noise that you can hear most noticeably at the 1:30 mark in the video. It sounds like it is coming from the driver side of the engine. I can not hear the knocking noise when I am inside the vehicle and it is most noticeable when I am standing by the driver side tire. I just wanted to know if this was an abnormal knocking noise for my tacoma or if many other individuals experience the same noise without any problems. I read some threads on here about oil pumps failing and just wanted to be sure that my oil pump is not on it's way out.

My truck: 2012 TRD Sport 4.0 - The truck has had this noise since I bought it with 17,500 on the odo. The noise has not created any problems. Truck drives great.

I might be more concerned about the thumping sound I hear starting around 1:59.

Started my '15 Tacoma V6 up a min. ago - been sitting for a couple of days. Engine is much quieter than what I hear in the video, then again, video equipment and computer speakers always seems to pump up the sound.

One would have to wonder why the previous owner bailed at 17,500?

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't overly concerned why the previous owner bailed because I picked it up at an acura dealership and assumed that they wanted to move to an suv or something. Then again I could be wrong. I'm at 58k on the odo right now so I guess I better get it into the dealership to get looked at. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the reply Midnight. Started reading that thread now. Do you have the same noise? If so, did you diagnose it to be the oil pump? Hoping for the best.

The link that MidnightRebel07 posted is mine, that's exactly the same noise that I had which caused Toyota to buy my 2013 back under Lemon Law.

All of that being said, guys are saying that it is the oil pump. I did have my oil pump replaced but the theory is that there was a bad run of them, therefore my new oil pump was noisy too. The sound that it makes IMO is exactly a gear noise, which is what the oil pump is. If that is all that it is, it may never be a problem.

I got thrown into this issue very early when no one knew what it was, and I had a lot of work done to my truck in order to diagnose it. My oil pump, timing chain idler gear/tensioner/sliders, front engine cover, serpentine belt idlers, and eventually my entire short block were all replaced with no resolution. My opinion is to have the dealer involved and get your oil pump replaced. That is one of two resolution that I heard will work and this solution has only been recent. Toyota also claims that the timing chain idler gear is another solution that had worked.

hotrod, thanks for the response. I am sorry to hear about all the problems you had with your 2013, but I'm glad you had the issue resolved and were able to get a new truck.

I knew something wasn't right when I started hearing that noise. At first I thought it was just piston slap, but after doing more research I realized piston slap typically goes away when a vehicle get to operating temperature. I'm glad I posted about this rather than letting it go any longer. I'm at 58,500 miles right now so I am cutting it close. I hope they don't give me the BS "it's normal response". I am going to schedule an appointment with the dealer for this weekend. I am hoping for the best.

I will keep you posted on my results. Thanks again for all of your help.

Dropped the truck off at the dealership last night. They should be looking at it first thing this morning. We'll see what they say. I'm expecting the, "it's normal bs", but I noted on my request, that this is different from the normal tacoma tick that all the 4.0's have. I also noted that possibilities for the cause of the noise are the oil pump and timing chain idler gear. We'll see what happens....

Well.... just got a call back from the dealer. Was in a meeting a work so I wasn't able to pick up the phone, but they left a voicemail. They said they were unable to duplicate the noise. I don't know how that's possible. Considering it makes the noise when the truck idles no matter if it's warm, cold, etc. Heading into the dealership after work to have a talk with the tech. I'm assuming they see I'm so close to being out of warranty about 1500 miles left.... and they don't feel like fixing it.

Update**** - Went to the dealer and they said the sound was normal. They said that it is common valve train noise. I know this isn't the case, but when I went to pick up my truck the dealer was closing (I got stuck at work) so I wasn't able to sit there and talk to a technician about the problem.

After picking up the truck I decided to try and diagnose the problem myself, with the help of this forum of course. So I asked a buddy for his breaker bar so I could take the serpentine belt off and listen for the sound. However, before I took the belt off I noticed something about the sound coming from my engine. You can hear the knocking noise in the video above, when the truck is in park or neutral. However, when you put the truck in drive the sound goes away completely. Put it back in park and the sound comes back, put it back in drive and the sound goes away.

Will this help me diagnose the problem? If it was a bad oil pump wouldn't it make the sound in drive as well? Bad timing chain tensioner should make the sound while the truck is in drive as well, right? Wondering if anyone can chime in.....

Thanks again for all of your help.

    mine does it too

news flash. it is normal, and the engine will last 400,000 miles if you just keep up with normal maintenance

if that -was- an issue she's gonna blow within the warranty period

    nothing to see here

    News flash it isn't.

I had my 14' diagnosed by toyota engineers. Report came back from them as bad oil pump.

hmmmm so should I ignore mine ?

I have 100000 mile warranty I am gonna let it ride and see how far i get before oil pressure drops and ruin my motor. I have 26000 miles now

if it is a bad oil pump, I think it isn't bad like 'mechanically gonna break', rather... bad like 'it is noisy'. time will tell

anyhow if it is bad, the extended warranty will pay for itself this time around. huge labor cost and engine cost when she does fail
I almost can't contain my excitement at a new engine in my future

Maybe, in my case I didn't have extended warranty, so I wasn't going to risk it.

125,000 mile warranty on my truck. I'm good for another 75k

When my truck is cold it ticks like a mother f'er... It's embarrassing actually. I need to take it in.

Thanks for all the replies.... That is what I am worried about on my truck. I have heard from numerous people on the forum that it could be a bad oil pump. Did your sound go away when you put the vehicle in drive or reverse?

My truck only makes the sound when it's idling, cold or hot, and in park or neutral. The sound goes away when you put the car in drive or reverse. If I had a bad oil pump, would the sound go away when putting the truck in drive or reverse?

Thanks again for all the help. I want to get this figured out as I am approaching being out of warranty.

when I start my truck it sounds like a old time jug band like the washtub bass, washboard, spoons, stovepipe and comb & tissue paper.

seeing as they TSB'ed my leafs (vibe on accel)
and TSB'ed my ECU/PCM and tranny programming (excessive pings)

but have not TSB the motor/engine/oil sump/VVTi, I am going with: normal

way back in 1998 when I got my 1999 4runner the exact same thing...hey whut are all these toyota engine noises...same with my 2010 yaris, what the hell people we need to revolt against toyota....
    ...
...snooze...never had a single problem with any of them

if the situation changes you bet I will post it up

toyota has sold many thousands of this identical engine, and toyota is under severe constant scrutiny from
the Feds and NTSB...I am pretty sure if this was a real issue we would have a remedy already, or one
is surely coming in the near future

I really think, at worse, if it is the oil pump making the whirrwhirrwhirr...
it is just a 'noisy' pump and they could have engineering it to be quieter. that is all
