we are talking about the pop/clunk sound of gears engaging that sounds like its coming from the rear, not the actual smoothness of the shift knob just to clarify?

I was thinking the same thing, but if you're deciding to have sex while driving you kinda deserve to have that damage happen to your transmission.

As far as newer cars having the shifting in a straight line, literally every new truck in the midsize category has it. Gm twins, new ranger, ridgelone, and frontier. Only one I'm not sure about is the jeep truck.

Mine never made that noise that I noticed. Now that I saw this video, I'm sure I'll start to notice it EVERY TIME I shift. Thanks. Great. Just great. one more thing I never noticed until now.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Yes, but they have a button you have to press to move the shifter. Tacoma’s don’t. That’s the difference. Don’t know why toyota decided to do it the way it does but the notch to put it into park keeps it from slamming into park accidentally.

My 2003 4runner used to, hell I could even FEEL the gear smashing and engaging lol. My 23 Taco also does it usually when not driven for few days.

Because this is a truck made of steel, its not a SUV for comfort and stupid buttons made for soft hands and for people who can't even use hand break because their hands are girly

You are sitting inside a truck, I don't know why people expect pickups to be silent and smooth like some electrical bs. This old school style is what makes this car so reliable. Just like the 4runner, NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING except exterior has changed in that truck since 2003s. 4runner has 5 speed transmission still.

Same with Taco, that V6 isn't even new, roots of that engine go back to 2000s, they just added direct injectors in 2016... Transmission is same way too and it feels bit rough like any pick up truck should, because they are cheaply made & don't focus on comfort compared to SUVs.

Sounds pretty normal. You can always have them check all TSBs are done.

It sounds like the typical “clunk” from slip yoke and ring & pinion backlash.

as in nothing to be worried about? Seems odd that some people say theirs shifts quietly and other says their produces the clunk and it’s normal.

pretty much any generic google search says that a clunk like this is bad u-joints, but I don’t believe a brand new truck would have bad u-joints. Makes be believe it’s normal if this is what it sounds like new.

Theres nothing wrong with your truck, its totally normal. These things arent whisper quiet with Mercedes AMG tolerances. You're going to 'hear' alot of the processes as they happen, and its totally fine.

    My 2022 Sport does this.
    Pretty normal I'd say.
