I found these awesome 50L low profile water tanks that are actually quite cheap but they are in South Africa and they don't export. They have offered to ship them to somewhere in South Africa if I can arrange transport to the US. Never done something like this before so I was wondering if anyone has and can give me advice about if this is even a good idea or not.

Those look pretty slick, but before I go through all that I would try and find a custom tank manufacturer. When my old RV watertank blew a seem and I couldn't find an exact replacement that would fit I found a company that took 1 off design requests. With all the transport fees and taxes I would think locally or within North America would be best (if you have already tried)?

If you really like them, offer to become a US distributor and ask for a free sample.

I immediately thought of the solar issue mentioned above, you can scald people with that, and be darn sure they are drinking water safe!

There are some flat potable water tanks for RV’s from stateside distributors, but they are probably not very UV resistant and would probably be best kept under a platform in the bed:

I would contact an importer for assistance, they know the ins and out of importing stuff and how to navigate all the bureaucratic red tape.

Holy shit, make one thread, hop on a flight, come back to tons of great info. Thanks guys! I sent an email to he US distributor of Ironman a couple days ago but haven’t heard back yet. Front runner makes a vertical one for behind the back seats that I was originally looking at but they want $200+ for it and it’s not ideal for a roof given the full spout position.

I’ll check out the RV option as well. Thanks again guys!

Edit: somehow missed the phone numbers for Ironman US. I’ll try giving them a call
