not talking about tranny fluid. Asking what diff fluid people are using to top off. I am going to check my diff in the morning and top off if needed and just wondering if others are just using Mobil1 or some other 75w90

I used Mobil 1, 75W90 type LS grade GL-5. The parts guy at my dealer said that was fine for all 3 (front diff, rear diff, transfer case).

I don't think so. The manual doesn't say. I googled mixing them and article I read said not. I topped off with synthetic. I figured better than low. But I plan on replacing all of it within 10K miles. Main use is rear. My rear was within 1/2" off full (below fill hole).

changing my diff oils tomorrow. Mainly to get any wear metals out, any water from water crossings, and to upgrade to a high quality synthetic.

Are you using a pump requiring a tube in bottle that does NOT screw onto cap? I did and it can get messy. The quart bottles are so light that the suction tube can tip them over. You will need two hands to deal with hand pump and tube insertion. I am picking up the pump that screws onto bottle. May use gallon jugs too. Even if you poured quart bottles into an empty gallon jug (Mobil oil empty bottle) it would be less potential for spilling oil

For what it's worth as soon as I read about the fluid issues I brought my vehicle back to my dealer to have the levels checked. My dealer provided me with the original 178 point original inspection showing that they had verified all the fluid levels met spec before the vehicle was released to me. They then checked them all again on this visit so I slept better. The reason I'd say to bring it back to your dealer instead of going out and doing it yourself is so there is a paper trail that can be followed if in the future you have issues. That and it free to you!

Only problem is people can't trust their dealers to do anything more than write down that the did something. Mine said they checked ATF level and it was fine. Did it myself and it was almost a quart low. The examples of others having the same experience are countless.

I hear you swimmer, they let me stay with the tech when he checked but not a lot of dealers are trustworthy.

just checked mine and seems to be full. I put my pinky in and i barely have to move it to get oil on it. I was tempted to add some till it overflows of the Redline Shockproof heavy I have left over from my mustang but its supposed to flow like 75w90 but I think it might be to thick. Probably only take 3-4oz though to get it to overflow

Checked my diffs and TC today and they were all fine. My transmission fluid was full as well when I had that checked by the dealer. I guess I'm lucky from a drivetrain standpoint, but I have a hell of a lot of rattles I'm fixing.

Yes. Take a regular allen wrench and insert the short end in the hole. Turn the wrench so the short part is pointing down and the long part is resting on the bottom of the hole. When you pull it out you can see the oil level with ref. to the bottom of the hole.

This not my idea it came out of an old Army service manual printed in 1953 that was for the M35 deuce and a half. Just do not somehow drop the wrench into the Diff.. That would wreck your day I am sure.

My fluid checks and grease checks are about the same as many others are reporting. Toyota is not the only MFGR having these types of problems. Check some of the other sites. I think this is due to the fact that almost no one really cares about quality in the work place anymore. They get their paycheck and just go home and have a beer.

Tranny was 3/4 quart low.....Used Toyota oil to fill.

Rear diff was 1 qt. low......Drained and filled with Mobile 1 synthetic LS 75W-90.

Grease in drive shaft was all but nil......Used Mobile NLGI 2 CM-S formulated for extreme heavy use. Like in construction and mining equipment. This stuff really stays put. For you real off roaders living in the warmer areas this is the stuff to use.

U bolts were not even close......One nut was 52 FT LBS, two were close and the rest were way off.
