Look where the eye bolts are in the 4 corners. Now look at the 2x4 in the back. So I remove the grated platform and attach the eye bolts to the far outside holes of the 2 x 4s (flipped over). The 2x4s have the addition (step, aka notch) to keep from lifting on the exterior of the shell (don't want to crack the gelcoat). I want to lift on the part of the shell that touches the top of the bed.

I don't have the shell (or truck) anymore, but you can log-in to http://www.watchyourstuff.com Username = demo Password = Password1! and see the rack. I can give you a live demo tomorrow after work. It worked great and I liked that I could remove and install shell by myself.

Just consider that you want to pick up the cap from the interior perches that rest on the lip of the truck bed without touching the overhang of the shell that runs along the outside of it. The idea is that if you don't pick up from the part of the shell designed to handle the weight of it, you could crack it, or at the very least damage the gel coat. Pretty logical.

BTW, I wonder why you couldn't log in to the camera. I do it every day.

Thread revival, but I made a video review of the Harken Hoister 7806.12 for anyone searching the forum for a solution in the future. It's a bit pricey at $150, and not perfect (it doesn't really want to release easily), but works well enough, and I can get swapped in or out in about 15 minutes.

Yeah. I got one of those, too. I was not impressed. It is indeed a PITA to release, and it becomes frustrating, and that's when accidents happen with 200 lbs over your head. Also annoying was the 75 lb working weight, which translates that you can't pull it up empty. I would not recommend.

I've seen other setups that were self rigged and used a small hoist driven by a drill, or similar. That's what I'd do next time.
