This is the one that scared me off lol. I really don't want to screw around with that connector that much. I just want to be able to plug that right back in to a new tweeter, if possible.

It's only two wires. Doubtful any other speaker will plug right up other than an oem tweeter. I can't remember a single time in the last 10 years where I had left the OEM connector and needed it.

I have never bought anything from Taco Tunes, but being banned from this site would not stop me from buying from them.

They are not plug and play. The subaru tweeters are plug and play though...

But attaching wires is as simple as sliding 2 exposed wires into a tube and crimping it with pliers.
They come with speaker wire. one side attaches to the speaker terminals, the other side has exposed wire. I cut off the stock harness connector and used butt connectors to attach the speaker wires.

After watching that Tacoma-holic video I'll say that wasn't that bad of a project.
As for moving 2 of the 4 wires on that connector; it matters for phasing. You want all the drivers moving in the same direction.

I also didn't see a capacitor on either unit. Think of a capacitor as a frequency sensitive resistor. The lower the frequency, the higher the resistance to it. I mention this because as part of it's function, it inverts the signal. If connected to the positive woofer terminal the other end of the capacitor will be the negative Tweeter terminal.

So the harness connecting to the stock tweeters have 4 wires. All the new tweeters have 2 wires. Which of the 4 wires would I be using and not using in connecting to the new tweeters?

The OEM “tweeters” on the 2nd gens were really small full range. So assuming you keep the stock HU and wiring; when replacing OEM tweeters with real tweeters, recommend installing bass blockers.

I run these in my Taco now. Total install time with the metro adapters was 1 hour max with tools ready. I also bought the Rockford Prime tweets and Amazon adapters...a little rubber silicone and taco tunes wire adapters...Plug and play good to go. The Rockford Prime tweets have inline crossovers so you can run the component (tweeter in center) speakers no prob.

That being said, 6 months later and you will want to add the Kicker Key amp upgrade so I would consider that as well (as I am )

Those are 3 way coxial speakers, so the tweeters are mounted on the main driver and do no have an external crossover. Using these speakers will allow you to not have to do anything to your factory tweeters at all. You may unplug them or leave them plugged in and it will make no difference other than sound preference.

Only if you run components where the tweeter is separated and there is an external crossover would you then need to start running new wiring. However even then, you would not need to actually cut any factory wiring if you purchased a speaker harness.

PM me if you need more wiring help. Happy to share advice

Thanks! That should be it! If I don't need the tweeters, I'm good! I don't know whether or not to get rid of the original tweeters. Having the hole there and no tweeters inside will kind of irk my OCDness but i'm still happy to just upgrade these crappy speakers and do it myself without much of an issue.

You'll notice a dramatic improvement simply by swapping in those drivers that you linked above. You dont have to uninstall the tweeter at all. You can leave it in place and just unplug it. Or, listen to it while its still plugged in and you might decide to just leave it connected. Either way, the tweeter shouldn't be any concern. Just get the proper speaker harness and you wont have to cut a single wire anywhere.

SO... problem... If I disconnect the tweeters, my door speaks stop working. When I reconnect the tweeters, the door speakers come back on. My door speakers have built in tweeters so I don't need the factory tweeters. Anyone know why this is setup this way or what I can do to fix it?

How does that help? I have coaxial speakers which cuts out the need for separate tweeters..
