I would argue that even with the scoop open, it would not provide any real "function". Therefore it would still be "nonfunctioning"

No because the scoop is after the CAI.. Anyone who does a CAI that does not get fresh air from anywhere other than the engine bay is a moron... a CAI is just that, it tries to get the cold air from somewhere other than the inside of the hood.

IE the stock intake is more of a CAI than the pipe that sucks straight from the motor bay atleast its got the snorkle under the fender getting colder air than inside the bay.

I live in the desert, when I left the gym yesterday the truck said it was 122 degrees, how could a cooler engine compartment not help to even a slight degree?

*but as I said before, mainly principle (unless you have a CAI)

I wonder what the difference in internal engine temp would be without a hood at all. I bet barely any change...

right, thats why I didnt get a CAI and just did a performance drop in replacement, seems like it would make things worse, but since all but the URD one do get the air from the engine compartment, it would help offset the performance decrease they have caused

NO! CAI's on our trucks are also useless...which has been covered as well. No significant gains were shown on the dyno to notice any increase in power...it just sounds a little cooler and thats it ;)

when you open the hood on a hot summer day its like opening the oven door, so seems like it would make a big difference

Who do you wheel with that they need to pop their hood everytime they come to a stop for a break? I have wheeled 10+ years and have only seen hoods popped when something is broken. Hell even in my 10 years in desert racing unless something is wrong the hood stays on...

Yes but I'm wondering how much of a difference releasing the heat around the engine bay itsself actually translates to the internal temp.

And my hypothesis is very, very little.

no shit, I wheel out in the fucking desert where the temps can exceed 115+ and have NEVER needed to "open my hood" lol!

   ..... that's a fail.....

Opening up the hood scoop does not have that great of an effect on the vehicle because there is no air being taken in from there but it does help in cooling the vehicles engine off faster. So if you are for performance this helps because the faster your engine cools the better.... and there is some air that enters into the engine thru the hood scoop so it does help in cooling the engine down but that's about it.... you won't gain any performance off of it other than cooling the engine down faster.

And I'm basing this partly on the act that the difference in operating temp, according my ultragauge, between summer (105 degrees) and winter (30-40 degrees) only translated to 3 degrees or so difference in motor temp.
