Hi everyone, we are thinking about getting a Boston Terrier, found a local breeder and the pups will be ready in time for Valentine's. Any pros and cons to this breed? I think my 3 year old daughter would love one. My wife has slight allergies but they say this breed does not shed much at all, thanks in advance!

I hear they are very unique, very little shedding and rarely a dog smell

I'm a Boston Terrier rescue mom. I've had over half a dozen BT rescues/foster dogs in the past couple years. This breed is perfect for families. They can be a little wild and hyper so I'd be very careful with small children. My Boston tends to jump on/hug children and depending on their size, her muscular little 17 lbs self has been known to knock down a child or two. My dog sheds very minimally, but she also loves a lint roller, she's an odd dog. Boston Terriers, Pugs, French bulldogs, etc are brachycephalic dogs. They often have breathing issues due to having a short snout, small nasal passages, and small heads. They also tend to sneeze, cough, reverse sneeze, gag, and fart a lot. Diet is also important when it comes to a BT. Certain foods will cause extreme upset stomach or excessive gas. It took over a year of a dozen different foods before I finally found one that works well with mine, she eats duck and potato every day. Exercise is super important, they need a fenced in yard so they can roam and run, but keep an eye on them, they're smart and sneaky and may try to escape. Just like any pure bred dog, they have issues. Make sure you get a guarantee of health certificate if you go with a breeder. I am anti-breeder because I'm a rescue mom but that's just me. I've gotten pure bred perfect young BT pups (under 1 year old) as my fosters before, they're abandoned just as often as pits or other dogs.

My wife loves the breed. Her grandparents always had one and she says they were great. That was until we lived in an apartment with a pair of the "devil dogs" living on the ground floor. Those two were evil. One day I came home to a blood trail up the walk, up the stairs, in the foyer, and all over the ground floor apartment door. I knocked on the door certain that I was going to need to dial 9-1-1. The owner was covered in blood. She said her dogs had gotten into a fight. Good grief, they were a pair! Anyway, I've met a few since then and they always seem like nice pooches. But those two? I wouldn't have saved them from a burning building as they were clearly hell-hounds and would have done just fine in the flames.

Have a Frenchie, which people mistake for a Boston all the time, and they are amazing.
    Highly recommended

My Cousin has a Boston. They are good as well, just a little more energetic than the Frenchies, smaller bodied, longer snouted.

    I wanted an MT.
I have a Frenchie and a Bugg... Bugg is a Pug crossed with a Boston Terrior... She is a ball of energy, she is smart, loves to play, listens okay (the pug in her is a little stubborn), sheds very little if any, and she is pretty much an all around great dog.

You have NOOOOO idea. He is so spoiled and such a great dog.
We have been VERY fortunate. Rocco will be 6 in May, and we have yet to have any of the respiratory issues associated with the bread.
Besides the normal vet visits for shots and clippings, he's only been in once to get his glands popped.

I dropped 2k in the first year due to unknown issues that went unsolved. She dropped over a third of her body weight and lost 80% of her fur. In the past couple years, we only have one or two visits not related to annual shots and checkup. The first couple years killed my wallet.

Mine will destroy every toy, even the indestructible ones. The only things she cant destroy is the hard rubber Kong toys.

Mine doesnt really mess with furniture, unless she sees stuffing. She destuffed a couch cushion once, and she destuffs all of her dog beds. Stuffing and foam sends her into a frenzy.

What about their tails? Do most people dock them at puppyhood or adulthood?

You don't dock a Boston tail. They should naturally be short. Any boston born with a long tail is not a show dog, and cannot be shown. Or it may be a mix. Long tails are becoming more prevalent with bad breeding.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
We have a 3/4 French, 1/4 boston. My wife loves it. I don't know why. I want to punt it off the deck daily. But, I also don't care for small dogs. He is playful, and better on a leash than our boxer.

you'll have to try a couple of blends of food. my daughter uses the FROMM and we use Taste of the Wild. dried liver for snacks and the odd table scrap after dinner (usually the best part of a steak).
they're prone to some pretty good farts. we find the stools loose sometimes so we put pumpkin in the food once a day. (don't use pie filling, just the can of pureed pumpkin).

a couple of other things to cover previous posts. if you dock the tail have the breeder do it now. both ours are docked but they're nice undocked as they have a little corkscrew tail. as for vetting the 1st year costs the most with shots and getting them spayed/neutered. after that it's next to nothing. maybe $100 a year.
Boston's are prone to joint and knees issues so get her on glucosamine right away. they come in a snack and both dogs get a piece every day. your vet will have that. they're soft chews.
pic of both dogs by the AC vent. too hot to go out.
